The Fiat 500L is a five-door, five-passenger, front-engine, front-wheel drive, high-roof B-segment MPV (compact minivan) manufactured in Kragujevac, Serbia by FCA Srbija, a FCA joint venture - and is marketed globally since its debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2012.
Based on a variant of the FCA Small Wide platform , the 500L uses Multiair Fiat variable timing valve engine technology and advanced cabin architecture: a packaged concept that prioritizes passengers and cargo volume. The 500L is renowned for its high point H-seating, high roof, high greenhouse and wide viewing field - and its recoverable interior system marketed as Cargo Magic Space.
In 2013, Fiat began marketing an extended 7-seat variant, 500L Living , in Europe. For the 2018 model year, the 500L receives a medium-sized facelift, with revised front and rear fascias along with In-car entertainment (ICE) and interior revisions. In early 2018, production reached 500,000 units.
The 500L got its name from the well-known Fiat model 500 , including the Fiat 500 in 1957 and the current Fiat 500, introduced in 2007. Determining the increased length and overall size exceeding 500 other variants, the suffix L shows "big."

Development
In April 2010, when Fiat released its 2010-2014 product development plan, the 500L was identified as a replacement for the Fiat Idea and its rebadged variant, Lancia Musa - and given an internal appointment L0 or > Ellezero . Two variants are projected, five and seven passengers, the latter initially targeted in North America but eventually only marketed in Europe.
The 500L platform is based on the "Small" Fiat platform, first used with Fiat Grande Punto and further developed since its launch in 2005. With the 500L, the platform is longer and wider to accommodate 500L front cabin architecture, prioritizing interior volume and reducing volume mechanical systems.
The designer of the 500L says the overall architecture is inspired by Villa Savoye, a modernist home designed in the 1930s by Le Corbusier located in Poissy, France. Fabrizio Vacca, senior interior designer with Fiat's Centro Stile in Turin described the "layered" theme with a medium-sized base with wide visibility and above that the panoramic dual-pane sunroof is available, very large.
At the 500L introduction, Fiat presented 96 pages, a multi-language PDF vade mecum (handbook) titled 500L A Design Approach, that tracks vehicle design.
In 2014, Lifan Motors introduces the Lifan 330, a very derivative of Mini Cooper and Fiat 500L, at Auto China 2014, Beijing Auto Show.

Design
As a five-door, five-passenger, two-box, high-roof B-segment MPV, the 500L is based on a variant of the GM Fiat Small Platform and uses Fiat Multiair engine, a hydraulically-enabled variable valve engine technology time (VVT) allows "cylinder by cylinder, stroke by stroke" intake air control directly through the gasoline engine inlet valve.
The 500L cabin front architecture delivers total passenger and cargo volume of 121.1 cubic feet, and features high H-point seating, high roof and greenhouses, split front pillar (A) with glass and rear polycarbonate (D) pillars. A split pillars and high greenhouses contribute to the wide field of view of the interior.
Bodywork has a reconfigurable interior system marketed as Cargo Magic Space - which includes a rear three-level cargo floor panels, a flat-front passenger seat and a reclining rear seat for passenger comfort, slide to/prioritize cargo and passenger volume, and fold and fall forward to save the second row seat and maximize the volume of the interior cargo.
500L structural architecture uses 74% high strength steel (HSS) and complies with international safety standards; features three-lane front-end load (crash) dissipation; has wide rear door openings; has a roof pillar that allows 90% visibility for the 360 ââà ° field of view of the driver; and reached the frontal area of ââ2.54 m 2 and aerodynamic drag coefficient (cd) of 0.30 - with rear spoiler, undercarriage engine and rear suspension shield, and an integral integral rear side profile (ie, small aerodynamic lips) to reduce the pressure behind the body parts and reduce the mud and debris formed in the rear window.
500L using shock absorbers (marketed as Constant Selective Constant Dosing Technology (FSD) ) designed to filter out high-frequency suspension inputs from uneven road surfaces while maintaining driving control - in mechanical rather than electronic systems.
Sunroof 500L is 10.8 sf, the largest in its class.
Introduction
In 2012, the 500L made its official debut on March 6 at the Geneva Auto Show - followed by a media introduction at Officia Grandi Riparazioni (OGR), the former Great Repair Shop of the Italian Railway, now a cultural center located at Corso Castelfidardo 22 in Turin - on July 4, the day Fiat has historically introduced its model 500 . The introductory presentation is built around the Big 500L theme (large MPV in the 4.1 meter trail), Light (eco-trail light), and Loft (spacious and sublime interior).
FCA Serbia inaugurated a reconstructed and renovated facility in Kragujevac in April 2011 - with production beginning May 26, 2012.
500L goes on sale in Italy in September 2012, with sales beginning in October 2012 for the rest of Europe.
Producing
The 500L industry begins at Fiat's Kragujevac plant in Serbia, a joint venture (JV) between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) which owns 67% of operations and the Republic of Serbia, which owns the rest. Previous facilities have functioned as factories and headquarters for Zastava Automobiles.
Between 2010 and 2012, FCA invested more than EUR1B and three years to improve plant infrastructure, restore its buildings, develop new production departments, and install advanced machinery and production systems. A co-located automotive supplier park includes sub-works for Magneti Marelli (exhaust and catalytic converter), Johnson Controls MM (instrument panel, interior, interior and plastic parts), Magneti Marelli (bumper and spoiler), DrÃÆ'äxlmaier (electric ), with other works at nearby Grosnica Supplier Park, including Johnson Controls (seats), PMC (suspension systems, sheet metal sheets and chassis assemblies), SIGIT (rubber and plastic parts) and HTL.
The 500L production was originally scheduled to be produced at the Italian Mirafiori plant in Turin and moved to Serbia, due to a poor working relationship in Turin.
About one percent of the 500L production is sold in Serbia, with 90% exported from Serbia via Bar port, Montenegro.
In 2013, a vessel carrying the first 3,000 Fiat 500L units for the North American market anchored in the port of Baltimore to disassemble the first shipment, then deliver the rest of the cargo to the Canadian port of Halifax.

To complete the 500L regular length, codenamed Fiat L0 (or Ellezero) (design code 330), in 2013 Fiat began marketing an extended seven seat variant in Europe known as 500L Living (or < i> MPW in Ireland and the UK), developed under the L1 project code, Elleuno, or design code 334.
500L is the first production car with an optional espresso machine in the vehicle.
