Initial years
Robert Rix was born in March 1841 in a farming family in Burnham Overy, Norfolk, and at the age of 10 was sent to work on the ground. However, he did not take a job and in two years had fled into the sea. He joined a small sailing coaster in Tees and his early career was spent trading with a port of Scotland north to South Wales and then near the continent.
He settled in Stockton-on-Tees in North East England and in 1862 married Margaret Dobson. While living here that he first founded the shipbuilding company on the south bank of Tees while at the same time continuing to work as a captain. The couple produced seven children and moved to Hull in 1883 where Robert continued his efforts.
Robert joined the business by his three sons, John Robert (Bob), Ernest Bertie (Bert) and Herbert Dobson (Herbie), and continued to expand his fleet by the addition of several steamers. In 1908 he came ashore to manage the business from the office.
1914-1918
Due to the increasing demand for transport tonnage during the Great War, Robert Rix & amp; Children increase their income and profits during that period and invest in ship building programs to modernize their fleets. The company also lowered a number of older steamers that took the price higher than in peacetime. In 1916 and 1917 Robert Rix & amp; Children take delivery of two pairs of steamers from Cochrane & amp; Sons Ltd in Selby, who for the first time gave birth to a family name. These are Magrix, Robrix, and Jarrix and Ebbrix and they set a precedent by which all Rix ships will be named since then.
1920s - 1950s
The early 1920s was a difficult time for shipowners due to depressed economic conditions and the increasing popularity of rail freight, but Robert Rix & amp; Children continue to expand their fleet by adding six ships, many of which are used to work on the east coast coal trade routes.
In November 1925 Robert Rix died after a brain hemorrhage, aged 84 years. He had worked until his death, leaving the office the day before along with other staff.
In 1927 the largest company roots in J.R. Rix & amp; The children's group, Rix Petroleum Ltd, was founded when Robert Rix & amp; The boys began importing tractor oil to evaporate into the UK to fuel the post-war agricultural revolution. The company also carries oil lamps from Russia to Humber on board the Rix. This led to such expansion so that in 1939 the company had 11 vessels scattered across four companies.
1939 - 1947
The transport rate increased again before the Second World War which meant the value of the old steam mats increased and Robert Rix & amp; Children sell a number of ships. The company also lost two ships during the war; one, Malrix crashed into a mine in Southend in December 1940 and Pegrix sank off the coast of Norfolk after colliding with the Coast Line's Normandy Coast.
The company aided the war effort directly in several ways. Ebbrix was taken for special tasks on the east coast of Scotland as part of the European invasion and Kenrix's master, Captain George Simison, was awarded the Atlantic Star medal for his participation in the Normandy Landing.
During the war years the shipping companies were run by Robert Kenneth Rix (Ken) and the petroleum business by John Leslie Rix (Les), Bob Rix's two sons. After the war, however, Malcolm and Geoffrey Rix, the sons of Bert and Herbie, both expressed an interest in joining the company.
Bob felt the company was not big enough to support extra family members and it was finally decided that the partnership should be dissolved. Bert and Herbie became equal partners in Robert Rix & amp; Sons and Bob, Ken and Les left to found J.R. Rix & amp; Children.
J.R. Rix & amp; Children began life in January 1947 with a working capital of £ 7,000 and a motorboat, the Magrix, in offices at Bank of England Chambers, Whitefriargate, Hull, but not limited until 14 February 1957. Meanwhile, some Rix's existing companies are currently incorporated including Rix Shipping Co Ltd (Rix Shipping), formed in March 1950, and Rix Shipping (Scotland) Ltd, formerly Piggins Rix Ltd, based in Montrose, Scotland.
Piggins Rix Ltd grew out of Rix Limes Ltd which has been established to supply the mined limestone at the mine at East Riding of Yorkshire to Scottish farming market. Oranges are transported by sea from Hull to Montrose on board the Rix where it is disposed of by J.M. Piggins Ltd. J.R. Rix & amp; The children bought the company - the first interest it had in Scotland - and named it Piggins Rix Ltd. Some time later Rix Petroleum set up a fuel depot there to serve the offshore industry and its growing domestic, agricultural, and transport customers.
Piggins Rix Ltd berganti nama menjadi Rix Shipping (Scotland) Ltd pada Januari 2013.

Over time, BMC vehicles lost a more reliable Japanese brand and therefore the company started selling Datsun, which later became Nissan.

The yard succeeded in continuing ship building until 2012 and for many years was the only shipbuilder left in Humber as all other yards had turned into repairs. But after completing Lerrix 53m long for Rix Shipping Ltd early last year, the company was closed and the venue was left to Dunston (Shipbuilders) Ltd, a new business dedicated to making aluminum boats for the wind farm industry.
Fuelmate Ltd

Victory Leisure Homes Ltd

Cosalt occupies a land adjacent to the Rix Road Industrial Estate, a Rix 12-acre site in Stoneferry east of Hull; when it stopped trading, Rix decided to buy factories, land and factories to make its own caravan and propose a manufacturing facility and increase the size of land ownership in the area to 20 hectares.
Three years after its founding, the business surpassed its original base and moved to a modern manufacturing plant in Gilberdyke, East Riding of Yorkshire, about 20 miles west of downtown Hull, the former Britspace modular building maker, who entered administration in 2011.

The business was created in response to the burgeoning renewable energy industry, particularly the offshore wind farm, which is mostly centered around the Humber Ports complex in Hull, Immingham and Grimsby.
Rix Sea Shuttle has five wind farm workshops built specially in Blyth, Northumberland, and in Paull on the northern edge of Humber Estuary. The company plans to increase the size of its fleet by 2015.
