Design

The building's design was typical of a federal type building of that era and was designed in a classical architectural style with limestone exterior. The foundation is built using granite that has been sawed, and the outer surface wall is made of Bedford Stone. The main door at the top of the large staircase is made of ornamental bronze, and the walls of the first floor lobby are finished in the Kasota Stone, excavated in Kasota, Minnesota. The first floor corridors and large stairs are finished in a travertine imported from Italy. Floor corridors and staircases are made of Terrazzo and Kasota Marble, and balustrades and fences are made from Italian Travertine and Italian Tavernelle Clairemarble.

In 1981, the building underwent a major renovation that updated the existing system into a modern code specification.
