Medium chain triglycerides ( MCT ) are triglycerides whose fatty acids have an aliphatic tail of 6-12 carbon atoms.

The fatty acids found in MCT are called intermediate chain fatty acids (MCFAs). Like all triglycerides, MCT consists of the backbone of glycerol and three fatty acids. In the case of MCT, 2 or 3 fatty acid chains attached to glycerol have a moderate length.

Rich sources for commercially profitable MCT extraction include palm kernel oil and coconut oil.

With regard to MCFAs, apart from the straight chain listed above (chain not branched) fatty acids, side chains (chain chains) of fatty acids also exist.

Analysis of molecular weight of milk from different species shows that while milk fat of all studied species is mainly composed of long chain fatty acids (16 and 18 carbons long), about 10-20% of fatty acids. in milk from horses, cattle, sheep, and goats is a medium chain fatty acid.

Several studies have shown that MCT may help in the process of burning excessive calories, resulting in weight loss. MCT is also seen as promoting fat oxidation and reducing food intake. Interest in MCT has been revealed by endurance athletes and bodybuilding communities. While the health benefits of MCT seem to be happening, the relationship with improved exercise performance is still weak. A number of studies support the use of MCT oil as a weight-loss supplement, but this claim is not without conflict, because about the same amount finds inconclusive results.

Medical relevance

MCT passively spreads from the GI tract to the portal system (a longer fatty acid absorbed into the lymphatic system) without the requirement for modification such as long chain fatty acids or long chain fatty acids. In addition, MCT does not require bile salts for digestion. Patients who have malnutrition, malabsorption, or fatty acid metabolism disorders are treated with MCT because MCT does not require energy for absorption, use, or storage.

Middle chain triglycerides are generally regarded as a good biological inert source of energy that the human body finds quite easy to metabolize. They have potentially beneficial attributes in protein metabolism, but can be contraindicated in some situations because of reported trends to induce metabolic ketogenesis and acidosis. However, there is other evidence to suggest no risk of ketoacidosis or ketonemia with MCT at levels associated with normal consumption.

Because of their ability to be absorbed rapidly by the body, medium chain triglycerides have found use in the treatment of various malabsorption diseases. MCT supplementation with a low-fat diet has been described as the cornerstone of treatment for Waldmann's disease. MCT is an ingredient in some special parenteral nutrition emulsions in some countries. The study also showed promising results for epilepsy through the use of ketogenic diets. Several studies have shown promising results for neurodegenerative disorders (eg Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease) but clinical effectiveness is unknown.

Technical use

MCT is bland compared to other fats and does not produce off-note (dissonant tastes) as fast as LCT. They are also more polar than LCT. Due to these attributes, they are widely used as solvents for taste and oral medicines and vitamins.
