Prime Opportunity Operation (August 1987 - June 1989) is the operation of the US Special Operations Command intended to protect US-flagged oil tankers from Iranian attacks during the Iran-Iraq War. The operation lasted approximately at the same time as Operation Earnest Will (July 1987 - December 1988), the majority of naval efforts to escort tankers through the Persian Gulf. The operation was initiated after the mining of a US-flagged Kuwait oil tanker Bridgeton .

Overview

Both operations are established - US Army Helicopters conduct a night-search and crush mission of frigates and naval destroyers and from two barges hired in the northern Persian Gulf. Navy SEALs and explosive ordnance discharges are operated from barges as well. But while Earnest Will is a widely publicized reaction to Kuwait's appeal for help, Prime Chance is a secret. Army helicopters fly at night, gliding to and from the naval aviation deck under the shadow of darkness. Helicopter pilots often fly about 30 feet (9.1 m) above water, and become the first to use night vision goggles and look for future infrared devices in combat. Tactics include using MH-6 Little Birds as a complainant for more armed AH-6s (for barge-launched missions), and using SH-60 Seahawk warships and helicopters for the same purpose (on ship-launched endeavors).

Planning

Planning and preparation for Prime Chance was launched shortly after a tanker on the first Earnest Will convoy hit a mine, confirming that more troops would be needed to ensure the safety of civilian ships. The Joint Chiefs of Staff launched a helicopter pilot search that could fly at night from navy ships, then set out to train them for special job requirements. Helicopter from the 160th Army Special Operations Flight Regiment reached the naval command ship La Salle in the Persian Gulf on 5 August 1987. The detachment was split into two teams, with a SEABAT call sign and one MH -6 Little Bird, two AH-6s, aircrew, and maintainer. On August 8, a detachment participated in the convoy's escort mission aboard La Balle . Others flew to the frigate Klakring to protect the minesweepers operating in the narrow delivery channel to the west of Farsi Island. The next day, the detachment of La Salle was transferred to Jarrett frigate and escorted the convoy to the Gulf of Oman.

Execution

Soon after, the operation started from a barge, dubbed Mobile Sea Bases (MSBs). They were formed as a special naval warfare unit (NSWTU) run by the SEAL commander and responded to a regional naval warfare special task group. Their mission is to stop Iranian troops from mining the Persian Gulf or attacking shipments. Each mobile base has two Mark III patrol detachment ships, a SEAL platoon, EOD detachment, Marine to provide security, MH-6 and AH-6 Little Bird helicopter helicopters and Black Hawk rescue birds, and air force combat controllers. Mobile Sea Base Hercules manned by Eastern Naval special warfare units, including Patrol Boats 777 and 758 from Special Boat Unit 20 and Special Boat Unit 24. Mobile Sea Base Wimbrown 7 manned by West Coast units, including Patrol Boats 753 and 757 from Special Boat Unit 13 and Patrol Boats 775 and 776 from Special Boat Unit 12.

On September 21, 1987, Iranian Ajr , an Iranian ship was converted for use as a minelayer was attacked. Using night-vision devices, the crew of the armed forces watched as Iranian ships put down several mines, then swooped in firing miniguns and rockets. The SEAL team boarded the ship and quickly caught it. During the attack, five Iranians were killed and 26 arrested. Several Iranian sailors were rescued from Persian Gulf waters after jumping into the sea during the attack. After collecting intelligence, SEAL and EOD stopped the ship the next day.

In January 1988, Task Force 118 arrived with OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter.

Earnest Will ended about five months after the Iran-Iraq ceasefire began in July 1988. soon returned to the harbor, but Prime Chance's patrol continued from Hercules until June 1989.
