Overland Park traces its roots to 1905, with the arrival of its founder, William B. Strang Jr. who began planning subdivisions along the old military road, which later became the city's main road. Strang developed most of what later became downtown Overland Park.

Overland Park is located in northeastern Kansas at the intersection of Interstate 435 and US Route 69 east of Olathe, downtown. The city center is approximately 13 miles (21 km) south-southwest of downtown Kansas City, Missouri.
