The Subaru Tribeca is a medium crossover SUV made from 2005 to 2014. Released in several markets, including Canada, as Subaru B9 Tribeca , the name "Tribeca" comes from the Tribeca neighborhood in New York City. Built on the Subaru Legacy platform and sold in five and seven seater configurations, Tribeca is intended for sale along with a slightly revised version known as Saab 9-6 . Saab, then a subsidiary of General Motors (GM), abandoned the 9-6 program shortly before its launch after the 2005 GM divestment of its 20 percent stake in FHI.

Inspired by the B9X concept car, Tribeca's original design was criticized at launch and then revised in 2007 for the 2008 model year, and the model name is shortened to just Tribeca in all markets.

Although not sold in Japan, the North American market received Tribeca in 2005 for the 2006 model year, and was introduced to Australasia and Europe in late 2006. In addition to these markets, Tribeca is also available in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, China and parts of Asia Southeast.

History

The vehicle was originally announced as B9X on November 5, 2004 at the South Florida Auto Show, and renamed B9 Tribeca in December after collecting current and potential customer feedback. "B" stands for Boxer Subaru engine (which is horizontally opposite), "9" refers to the internal category code, and "Tribeca" is added so that "Subaru [can] utilize vested equities that have been associated with progressive, artistic and cultural styles which is represented by the name TRIBECA, "according to Subaru President and CEO, Kyoji Takenaka. The Tribeca made its worldwide debut at the North American International Auto Show in January 2005 and is scheduled to go on sale in early summer 2005 for the 2006 model year, with production at the SIA plant in Lafayette, Indiana supplying vehicles for sale in America. Country, Canada and Chile.

2006-2007

The Tribeca B9 features a triangular grille and a rounded body shape. Subaru also uses styling grille in Impreza, and the Japanese market is Subaru R1 and R2 kei car products. Because this styling motif proved controversial, all Subaru redesigns of the future leave this design language.

The grating design and the flight theme were originally conceived and applied to the previous B11S and B9 Scrambler vehicle concept by Fuore Design, an independent design consultancy firm based in Spain. The lattice design is reported "intended to convey the glorious history of the parent company Fuji Heavy Industries in flight". While most exterior designs were completed before the arrival of Subaru designer Andreas Zapatinas, Zapatinas and his team were responsible for interior design, and dashboards in particular.

The Tribeca was originally powered by a 3.0-liter EZ30 boxer engine paired with a five-speed automatic transmission.

The Tribeca was slightly reworked in 2006 for the 2007 model year. The updated model, first shown at the Chicago Auto Show, includes a revised grille, struts, stabilizer rods, and spring prices. Inside, XM Satellite Radio and iPod connector are provided. Backup cameras and parking assistance systems are optional for navigation systems. The "Special Edition" package includes mesh grilles, XM radios, and unique wheels.

Saab 9-6

Saab has plans to sell the Tribeca version, called "9-6" but plans to stop in 2005 when Saab's parent company GM sells 20% of its shares in FHI, partly acquired by Toyota. 9-6 will be built with Tribeca at the SIA plant in the United States. Saab revised their plans to replace the 9-7X after a two-year short period, and instead, the body-based body SUS Oldsmobile Bravada continues to produce until the 2009 model year.

Saab held back the Tribeca version from public until the 9-6 prototype was added to the Saab museum in TrollhÃÆ'¤ttan in July 2011, with an interior similar to the contemporary Tribeca B9. Many styling exterior tweaks (including front fenders) of the Saab 9-6 that have never been used before were used for the 2008 model facelift, which was released relatively soon after the original model release.

2007-2014

Subaru released the 2008 model at the New York International Auto Show in April 2007 with a facelift and a larger 3.6 liter engine EZ36 on average with 191 kilowatts (256Ã, hp). Subaru claims 10 percent better fuel savings by using regular grade gasoline; 2006 and 2007 models require premium. At the same time, Subaru dropped the "B9" identifier, renaming the "Subaru Tribeca" vehicle in all the markets it was offered. The rear of the vehicle is also slightly redesigned with a more rounded taillamps, a restored hatch, and the rearmost side windows are reshaped. The interior style does not change, but the second row seats are redesigned for more space and easier access to the third row.

Market

North America

The North American Tribecas market offers two trim levels - a plain and Limited model, which adds moonroof, leather interior, roof rails to improve the cargo carried and premium audio system with a six-disc CD changer on the dashboard. The interior color is somewhat limited either for light ("Desert Beige") or dark ("Slate Gray"), either color finish either fabric (on a plain model) or leather (exclusive to the Limited model) trim. For a trimmed skin model, no interior color options are available; interior color is determined by the exterior color. In 2007, beige trim trims were dropped and plain models available only in two exterior colors. The North American market 2006 to 2007 year model B9 Tribeca also has a smaller rearview mirror that is upgraded to a larger European market mirror starting in the 2008 model year.

Limited trim levels include a multifunctional display on the dashboard that displays audio system information, travel computer functions, and outside temperature. When equipped with a navigation package, the screen adds navigation system information, maintenance intervals, controls for various vehicle settings, calendars, calculators, and memo-taking functions. Alternative back-seat DVD entertainment systems and navigation packages are available on models with third-row seats, which add video input from the rear seat DVD entertainment system that can only be displayed on the instrument panel screen if the parking brake is engaged.

The volume of cargo is 37.6 ft (1.06 m 3 ) with second row seat raised and 74.4 cuÃ, ft (2.11 mm 3 ) with back seat lowered. Fixed seating configuration on a standard second row seat or optional third row seat.

The vehicle is equipped with six airbags; two for front passengers, two side impact airbags deployed from the outer edge of the front seat and side curtain airbags that descend in front of the front and side doors of the second row.

Two stereo packages are offered, either a 100-watt six-speaker system with an in-dash single-disc in-dash MP3 player, or a 160 watt, stereo premium, nine speakers with subwoofer and six-disc in-dash CD changer, also compatible MP3. Both stereos have audio controls mounted on the steering wheel, and in 2007, additional audio jacks have been added.

In North America, the Tribeca is the only vehicle in this class equipped with all-wheel drive as standard equipment. In the United States, Subaru's initial television advertising campaign for Tribeca clearly featured the Kansas song "Dust in the Wind". The Tribeca won the Ward's Auto 2006 "Interior of the Year" for utility vehicle crossover premium pricing in voting from the automotive industry professionals. Also, it was considered the Most Innovative Concept at the Detroit Auto Show 2004. The Tribeca scored well at the Insurance Institute for Road Safety collision test; it was ranked "Top Safety Pick".

Drivetrain

Subaru chose to use the horizontal-opponent aluminum alloy machine "boxer" to minimize the weight of the powertrain and lower the center of gravity thereby reducing the body roll. Engine weight and automatic transmissions are laterally balanced rather than balanced from left to right. The power distribution is also directly from the transmission to the front wheels, and is distributed to the rear axle through a "Variable Torque Distribution" system that uses a central planetary differential gear with electronically controlled hydraulic couplings, with 45% split torque to the front axle and 55% rear wheels in normal driving conditions. The rear wheels are pushed through the rear differential, which is a limited slip on some models. Differential front is integrated into Subaru transmission.

Boxer design also provides near-perfect vibration mitigation because the movement of each piston is precisely countered by the corresponding piston in the opposing cylinder bank, eliminating the need for the balancer shaft, and that the piston's movement is in the horizontal plane. The only vibration caused by a boxer machine is secondary to a cylinder that is slightly offset at the opposite bank. However, this vibration is minimal and is largely absorbed by the rubber engine holder. Torque steer is also reduced with this type of power train layout. This is achieved by having front driveshafts with the same weight and length, and extending from transmission to the front wheels almost perpendicular to the transmission.

The Tribeca 2006 was initially assessed at 18 mpg -US (13Ã, L/100Ã, km; 22 mpg -imp ) using the EPA city cycle and 23 mpg -US (10Ã, L/100Ã, km; 28 mpg -imp ) on the EPA highway cycle. Using the revised EPA driving cycle, consumption increases to 16 mpg -US (15Ã, L/100 km; 19 mpg -imp ) city and 21 mpg -US (11Ã, L/100Ã, km; 25Ã, mpg -imp ) highway, with combined consumption of 18 mpg -US (13Ã, L/100à , Km; 22 mpg -imp ) for the original engine (3.0-liter engine) and the revised (3.6 liter engine).

Cobb Tuning

In 2006, Cobb Tuning released several performance improvements for the Tribeca B9, including a supercharger that increased output by 70 hp (52 kW) to 320 hp (240 kW), suspension tuning package, and four piston front brakes.

Termination

Subaru announced in January 2012 that Subaru Tribeca will stop being sold in the US and Australia, and that its production will end in December 2012. On October 18, 2013, Autoblog, Jalopnik, and Cars.com all affirmed that Subaru informed its dealers that production at Tribeca would ended in January 2014 due to slow sales.

Subaru sold just under 77,000 Tribecas in the United States, making it one of the best-selling vehicles in the US in 2011 and 2012. Only 1,247 Tribecas were sold in the first nine months of 2013, and ranked seventh among the worst sales. vehicles in the United States for the 2013 model year with only 1,598 units sold, down 23% from 2012.

The termination occurs because Subaru is considering replacing the vehicle with an upscale 7-seat crossover SUV, possibly based on Subaru Exiga, which will compete with Ford Explorer and Nissan Pathfinder. The replacement vehicle has been at the planning stage in an effort to attract new buyers without alienating the existing one.

Subaru stated in April 2015 that the next generation of Exiga Crossover 7 for the Japanese market will not be offered in North America because of its size, and instead a larger Tribeca replacement that can be built in the United States is being studied. In the 2017 LA Auto Show, Subaru revealed Subaru Ascent, a new mid-size SUV, a crossover, set as a substitute for Tribeca in North America in Summer 2018.
