Super Bowl XLVI (46) is an American soccer match between the National Football Conference (NFC) champion New York Giants and American Football Conference (AFC) champion New England Patriots to decide the National Football League (NFL) champion for the 2011 season. The Giants beat the Patriots by a score of 21-17. The game is played on February 5, 2012, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the first Super Bowl to be played in Indiana.
In addition to winning their fourth Super Bowl in team history, the Giants set a new record for the lowest regular season record (9-7, winning 56.3% percentage) by the Super Bowl champions. On the next drive, Brady completes the pass to BenJarvus Green-Ellis for 7 yards, Deion Branch for 15, and Wes Welker for 19, moves the ball into the 31-yard Giants line.
Second quarter
New York managed to stop the drive in their own 11-yard line, but Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 29-yard field ball for New England's first scoring early in the second quarter.
The Giants trepidated on the next drive, then held the Patriots to a three-and-out. When New York's next drive stalled, Weatherford's 51-yard punter granted possession of Patriots on their 4-yard line. Brady, however, finished eight consecutive operands for 71 yards, and threw a 4-yard pass touchdown to run back Danny Woodhead, giving the Patriots a 10-9 first-half lead, the same halftime deficit that the Giants faced against the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl. XXI. The drive went for 14 plays and covered 96 yards, tying the record for the longest drive in the history of the Super Bowl.
Third quarter
New England took the second half of the kickoff and started out strongly: Brady completed a 21 yard pass to Chad Johnson (the only postseason reception), and two rushed by Green-Ellis up 25 yards to the 33-yard New York line. Brady finally completed an 8-play, 79-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass for a tight second-year Aaron Hernandez, boosting New England's lead to 17-9.
Starting the next drive of their own 35-yard line after 34-yard kickoff return Jerrel Jernigan, New York responded with a drive to the Patriots 20-yard line where Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes converted a 38-yard field goal, cutting the score to 17-12.
On the next drive, New York forced three-and-outs - including Justin Tuck Sack Brady on the third down - and Will Blackmon returned 43-yard field Zoltan Mesko 10 yards to the Patriots' 47-yard line. New York then pushed back into the scoring range on drives utilized by several different players, including a 12-yard reception by rarely using Bear Pascoe's tip to reach the New England 9-yard line. On the third down, however, the sack by New England Anderson and Rob Ninkovich forced New York to complete another Tynes field goal, scoring 17-15 with 35 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Fourth quarter
In the second game of the fourth quarter, the first turn of the game occurred when Giants midfielder Chase Blackburn picked up Brady's bait in the New York 8-yard line. New York then drove to the Patriots' 43-yard line, but stopped there and had to kick the ball. New England took the ball back in their own eight yards with less than ten minutes in the fourth quarter. With 4:06 remaining in the game, New England picked up the ball in the 44-yard line of the Giants on 2nd-and-11 and Tom Brady threw to Wes Welker who was not found. However, Brady's high bait and Welker can not kick it when it falls to the ground, greatly preventing big gains. New England's impulse stalled on the Giants' 44-yard line and they were forced to kick the ball, after which Brady's wife, Supermodel Gisele BÃÆ'¼ndchen, famously blamed Welker, said that her husband could not both "[T] hrow and catch the ball." TV footage of the game showed Bill Belichick urging his defense to focus on stopping Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks, and forcing the Giants to go to secondary options Mario Manningham and Pascoe.
The Giants take ownership of their own 12-yard line with 3:46 left in the game and one time runs out. In the first game, in what ended up being one of the key games of the game, Manning completed a deep bait along the left side to Manningham to earn a 38-yard into midfield. New England coach Bill Belichick challenged the catch but the call on the pitch stood up and it made him lose his first team time. Two more settlements from Manning to Manningham added 18 yards. Manning then completed a 14-yard pass to the Nicks in the 18-yard New England line on the two-minute memorial. Two later dramas, New England called their second timeout with 1:03 left after one yard running Bradshaw gave New York down 2 and a goal on the six-yard line.
With the Patriots descending to their final deadline and progressing by two points, 17-15, it is likely that the Giants will run the game to stop the goal line, which will force the Patriot to use that deadline to stop the clock on one of the last two dramas. The Giants could run the clock down, allowing Tynes - who does not lag under 30 yards in four years - to kick a winning field goal, and give the Patriots only about 20 seconds from the remaining game to score again. It also means that the Patriots can call defensive play where they will purposely allow the Giants to score, which despite giving up the lead will allow the Patriot to get the ball back with that time limit and with more time remaining. New England opted to let the New York score, unlocking its defense to let Bradshaw enter the final zone with the ball. In what was then called "maybe a weird game in the history of the Super Bowl", Bradshaw attempted to stop at the 1-yard line after realizing what the Patriots were doing, but the momentum forwards made it fall into the final zone for touchdown. The touchdown deliberately gave up giving the Patriots 57 seconds to score again, and they got into their last drive left behind with a count of 21-17 after the Giants failed to convert the two-point play.
The final drive game starts on the 20-yard line of New England. Brady's first two bait falls were incomplete and then he was fired by Tuck in third, leaving Patriots 16 yards from the first down and forcing them to use their last timeout. Faced with heavy pressure in the pocket, Brady avoided linebacker Michael Boley and then threw a bullet into the Deion Branch. Branch catches the ball and runs out of bounds on the 33-yard line for the first down. The 11-yard finish from Brady to Hernandez advanced the ball to the Pats '44, followed by twelve men on the penalty area against the Giants, who moved the ball to 49 Patriots' with 9 seconds left. After an incomplete pass, Brady, in the final game, throws Hail Mary's Hail Mary directed to Hernandez in the final zone, but the ball is deflected by the Giants defender. Rob Gronkowski's tight end dove with his hand stretched out towards the ball but still a yard away as it touched the ground, ended the Super Bowl XLVI and gave New York their fourth Super Bowl victory in franchise history.
