Super Bowl XLVI (46) is an American soccer match between the National Football Conference (NFC) champion New York Giants and American Football Conference (AFC) champion New England Patriots to decide the National Football League (NFL) champion for the 2011 season. The Giants beat the Patriots by a score of 21-17. The game is played on February 5, 2012, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the first Super Bowl to be played in Indiana.

In addition to winning their fourth Super Bowl in team history, the Giants set a new record for the lowest regular season record (9-7, winning 56.3% percentage) by the Super Bowl champions. Patriots enter the game with a regular 13-3 season record, and are also looking for their fourth Super Bowl win. The game is also a rematch of the Super Bowl XLII, where New York also won, 17-14, to ruin the New England run in the perfect 2007 season in what is now regarded as one of the biggest disruptions in sports history.

The Giants jumped to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter of the Super Bowl XLVI before Patriots scored 17 unanswered points to take 17-9 in the third quarter. But the Giants prevented the Patriots from scoring again, and two successive times in New York scored from New England advantage 17-15 at the end of the third quarter. The Giants ended the 88-yard drive by running back a 6-yard touchdown Ahmad Bradshaw with 57 seconds left in the game. Eli Manning, who completed 30 of 40 passes for 296 yards, one touchdown, and no interception, was named the Super Bowl MVP for the second time in his career. He became the third consecutive quarterback to win the award after Aaron Rodgers in Super Bowl XLV and Drew Brees in Super Bowl XLIV.

The game broadcast on NBC broke the record for the most watched program in American television history, previously set during the Super Bowl the previous year. The Super Bowl XLVI is watched by an average audience estimate of 111.3 million US audiences and an estimated total audience of 166.8 million, according to Nielsen, which means that more than half of Americans are watching at least some initial broadcasts. The game also broke the record for most tweets per second during sporting events, with 13.7 million tweets from 3pm. until 8 pm (PST).

Per convention as an even numbered Super Bowl, Patriot as an AFC representative has the appointment of the home team. Super Bowl XLVI is the sixth Super Bowl where both teams have competed in previous Super Bowl matches, as the Giants and Patriots previously met at the Super Bowl XLII. Both head coaches (Tom Coughlin and Bill Belichick) and both begin quarterbacks (Eli Manning and Tom Brady) back from Super Bowl XLII.

Host selection process

Three cities bid for games:

  • On 31 January 2008, the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau announced their plans to organize a match at Reliant Stadium, and held events in nearby Reliant Park, hoping that their city will host the championship game for the second time since Reliant Stadium opened.
  • On February 19, 2008, the City of Indianapolis, led by Colts owner Jim Irsay and Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, officially announced details about their intention to bid for the Super Bowl XLVI. Part of the agreement includes a proposal to build a training facility on the Arsenal Technical High School campus that will be used by schools after the Super Bowl.
  • On March 6, 2008, one month after hosting the Super Bowl XLII at Phoenix University Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the second Super Bowl held in the Phoenix metropolitan area, the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee led by chairman Mike Kennedy's Committee officially announce their intent to bid on another. Glendale finally won his bid for Super Bowl XLIX in February 2015.

NFL franchise owners chose Indianapolis's offer at their meeting on May 20, 2008 in Atlanta.

Labor disputes have threatened delays or cancellations of games during spring and summer 2011; The league officials have set up an emergency plan to delay a one-week game if it is necessary to postpone regular season games into the second week of January. As the dispute settled well before the start of the regular season, no delays were held, and the match remained as originally scheduled.

This is the first Super Bowl to be played in Indianapolis, and only the fourth time that the Super Bowl has been played in a city with cold weather, after Detroit (XVI and XL) and Minneapolis (XXVI). Team

Giants New York

Working around a series of injuries, the Giants ended up with a 9-7 record during the regular season and returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2008, winning NFC East and finishing the season as No. No. 4 NFC. Finally back to full strength, the Giants entered their 17-week game with the Dallas Cowboys with both teams tied to lead the division with 8-7 records. The Giants took a 21-0 first-half lead and while the Cowboys closed the gap to score 21-14 at the start of the 4th quarter, the Giants held to beat the 31-14 Cowboys, clinching division titles and playoff spots.

The New York offense was led by Super Bowl midfielder XLII midfielder Eli Manning in his seventh season as a team starter. Manning set new career highs in almost every statistical category in 2011, throwing for a franchise record of 4,933 yards and 29 touchdowns, with 16 interceptions, giving him a 92.9 passer rating. The main target is the recipient Victor Cruz, who captured 82 feeds for the franchise record of 1,536 yards (3rd position in the NFL) and 9 goals. But he has many other targets, including Hakeem Nicks (76 receptions, 1,192 yards, 7 goals), Mario Manningham (39 receptions and 523 yards in 12 matches) and Jake Ballard's stiff end (38 receptions, 604 yards).

Despite not being on the pitch for four games due to injury, running back Ahmad Bradshaw is the team's leading rusher with 659 yards and 9 goals. He is also a reliable weapon in passing games, hauling 34 receptions for 267 yards and two touchdowns. Brandon Jacobs also made a contribution on the pitch, rushing for 571 yards and 7 touchdowns.

The New York defense line is led by defensive ends Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Paul and Osi Umenyiora. Pierre-Paul collected 86 combined tackles and ranked fourth in the NFL with 16.5 sacks, making it the only Pro Bowl option in the Giants defense, while Umenyiora, limited to 9 matches due to injury, recorded 9 sacks and 2 were forced to grope. The secondary Giants are led by Corey Webster, who intercept 6 career high operas. Defensive backs Kenny Phillips and Aaron Ross added four interceptions each, while Antrel Rolle's safety took two passes and led the team in a combined handle with 96.

The Giants joined the 2008 Arizona Cardinals and 1979 Los Angeles Rams as the only other team to advance to the Super Bowl with less than ten wins since the NFL expanded into a 16-match season in 1978, and the only of the three that won the Super Bowl which they are improving. They have won six consecutive playoff games away from their home stadium, dating back to their victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round of 2007. That includes their Super Bowl XLII victory over this same Patriots, even though the game was played on a neutral site (and the Giants are the "away" team designated for the game). The 2011 Giants are the first team in NFL history to reach the Super Bowl after being outscored by their opponents in the regular season (394 points printed, 400 points allowed).

New England Patriots

The Patriots finished with a 13-3 record, winning AFC East and reaching No. 1. 1 AFC in the playoffs. New England lost 2 consecutive games for the Steelers and Giants at 8 and 9 weeks respectively, before collecting to win their remaining eight games.

Back at the wheel of the offense was 12-year-old quarterback Tom Brady, who grabbed his 7 Pro Bowl selection. Starting every game of the season, Brady completed 65.6% of his bait for a career as high as 5235 yards (the second highest total in NFL history at the time) and 39 passing goals, with only 12 interception and 105.6 ratings. Brady also added 109 yards and three scores in the field. His main weapon in the passing game was Pro Bowl receiver Wes Welker, who led the NFL with 122 receptions (22 receptions ahead of second place) for 1,569 yards and 9 touchdowns. New England also has two best ends in the NFL: Pro Bowler Rob Gronkowski, which sets a tight final record to receive (1,327 yards) and touchdown catch (17); and Aaron Hernandez, who recorded 79 bait for 910 yards and 7 goals, while also rushing for 45 yards. Another major element of passing game is a veteran Deion Branch receiver, who captures 51 tickets for 702 yards and 5 scores. The recipients of Chad Ochocinco, Tiquan Underwood, Julian Edelman, and Matthew Slater contributed little to passing attacks; the latter two also serve as an emergency defense.

New England has some major contributors in ground games. Their main swimmer was BenJarvus Green-Ellis, who rushed to 667 yards and 11 goals. Running back Stevan Ridley added 447 yards and 5.1 meters per carry average. Danny Woodhead contributed 351 yards with an average of 4.6 YPC, and gained 437 yards back to kickoff. New England also has a strong offensive line, passed by Pro Bowl's guardian Logan Mankins and Brian Waters. With all these weapons, New England ranked third in the NFL with 513 points.

The Patriot defense line featured two Pro Bowl options: Vince Wilfork, who produced 3.5 sacks, two interceptions, and one had to grope; and Andre Carter, who contributed 10 sacks and forced two people to grope. Defensive End Mark Anderson is also a major force on the line, getting 10 sacks and two forcing himself. Behind them, Rob Ninkovich excels at the linebacker, gets 74 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and two interceptions. In the secondary, cornerback Kyle Arrington has a breakout season. After recording just one interception in his first three years, Arrington picked 7 baites in 2011 to lead the NFL in that category, while also making 88 tackles. Linebacker Jerod Mayo leads the team handling 95.

With victories in the 2011 AFC Championship Game Brady and head coach Bill Belichick becoming the first midfielder's combination to reach the Super Bowl five times, surpassing the record held by Terry Bradshaw and Chuck Noll of the Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl team of the 1970s. Belichick tied Tom Landry for his second appearance as head coach at the Super Bowl, behind only Don Shula six.

Season and playoff round

The Patriots and Giants face each other in New England during the regular season; The Giants won the game, 24-20. Incidentally, the Giants and Patriots are also facing each other during the regular season before Super Bowl XLII with the Patriot won regular season games and the Giants will win the Super Bowl. Super Bowl XLVI marks the 13th Super Bowl which is a regular season re-match. The losers in the regular season are 7-5 in these games before Super Bowl XLVI.

New York ended the season as champion of NFC East and No. No. 4 at the conference. The Giants beat the No. 5 Atlanta Falcons seed in the Wild Card round 24-2, the first playoff game at the MetLife Stadium. Eli Manning threw for 277 yards and 3 goals without interception, while the Giants defense closed Falcons, the only Atlanta point coming from the security provided by Manning's intentional grounding penalty in the final zone.

The Giants then moved to face No. 1. 1 and Super Bowl XLV champion Green Bay Packers in the division round. The Giants are never left in the game, winning 37-20. One of the key plays in the game was Mary Hail passing by Manning to Hakeem Nicks, giving New York a 20-10 lead at the end of the first half. As they did for 2007 MVP Tom Brady Patriots' offense infringement, the Giants produced significant pressure on the quarterback Packers and MVP season Aaron Rodgers, fired him four times and disrupted the talented receiver corps. This is the first time in the NFL history that the 15-1 team failed to qualify for the division in the playoffs.

The Giants then faced No. 2 seeded San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. After a series of defensive standoffs in the fourth quarter, the game ended with an extension. Both teams continued to struggle on the offense, until New York midfielder Jacquian Williams took off the ball from wide San Francisco recipient Kyle Williams after the return of the ball. The Giants recovered the ball in a 24-yard 49-yard line, setting up a 31-yard field goal effort by Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes. Unlike Cundiff earlier that day, Tynes's shot was successful, giving the Giants a 20-17 victory.

As the No. seed. 1 in AFC, New England grabbed a first-round advantage and home field throughout the AFC playoffs. In the division round, the Patriot defeated the Denver Broncos 45-10. The Patriots dominate the game throughout, setting up new postseason franchise records for the total yard (509), points (45), and margin victories (35). Tom Brady completed 18 of 25 passes for 246 yards and a postseason five touchdown record in the first half. Patriot defense has a breakout performance: Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow held only with 9 out of 26 settlements and fired five times.

In the AFC Championship Game, the Patriots face off against No. 1. 2 at Baltimore Ravens. Brady was beaten by the Ravens quarterback, Joe Flacco, who threw more yards and touchdowns at the same amount of settlement and effort. Nevertheless, New England managed to lead 23-20 in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Brady. With 1:44 remaining in the quarter, Baltimore gets the ball back with one last chance to tie or win the game, driving all the way to the New England 14-yard line. But the Patriots managed to hold them there, with Sterling Moore's cornerback breaking up two consecutive Ravens grads in the red zone, including one in the final zone. Facing a fourth down, Baltimore tries a 32-yard field goal by kicker Billy Cundiff who will tie the game and maybe take him overtime. Cundiff missed a wide left kick, allowing the Patriot to advance to the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl pre-match record

The Patriots, as the designated host team, have the choice of wearing their home navy blue shirts or white shirts. Briefly, there is speculation that the Patriots may wear a white T-shirt to replace the T-shirt from Super Bowl XLII, where the Patriots wear dark blue and the Giants wear white. Also, the Giants are 4-0 in a playoff game in their white shirts since the 2007 season. However, the Patriots announced on Monday after the Games Championship Conference that they will be wearing their traditional blue home jersey as the home team in the Super Bowl XLVI.

Hotel experts speculate that "Indianapolis will see the grimest hotel prices gallop in the history of the Super Bowl." The city has 6,000 hotel rooms, fewer than typical for the host city Super Bowl. Some rooms in downtown Indianapolis reportedly cost more than $ 4,000 a night. In contrast, rooms close to the stadium at the previous Super Bowl are usually available around $ 200. Lack of rooms and high prices lead some participants to plan to stay in Chicago, 180 miles away, and take the bus to events.

Because the Giants and Patriots drew their fan base from New York City and Boston, the Super Bowl echoed the fierce competition between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox in Major League Baseball. Tom Brady said of the competition: "There is great competition... between Boston and New York... When I get into the team, it's always the Red Sox-Yankees.We've had some pretty good matches against the Giants. For the last few years, so I do not think anyone is upset that it is the Giants. "

Broadcasting

Television

United States

In the United States, this game is broadcast nationally by NBC. It is also broadcasted online, both to computers (via NFL.com and NBCSports.com) and mobile devices (via the NFL Mobile Verizon Wireless app), the first legal online stream of a Super Bowl broadcast in the US. Al Michaels called play-by-play for NBC, marking the eighth time that he was behind the microphone for the Super Bowl and the second time he called the Super Bowl for NBC (Michaels had previously done play-by-play for Super Bowl XXII, XXV, XXIX , XXXIV, XXXVII, and XL for ABC and Super Bowl XLIII for NBC). Cris Collinsworth is the color analyst for the game, the second Super Bowl as a game analyst and first since he was at the booth for Super Bowl XXXIX for Fox. Michele Tafoya is a side reporter. Bob Costas and Dan Patrick (who also lead the trophy presentation ceremony) hosted a pregame, first half, and postgame coverage for NBC with Football Night in America analysts Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison and special guest analysts next to Costas during a pre-match celebration), Aaron Rodgers and Hines Ward. Also helping NBC's broadcast were reporters Alex Flanagan, Liam McHugh, and Randy Moss and NFL insiders Mike Florio and Peter King.

As part of "Fake Sweep Operations", Immigration and Customs Enforcement, along with US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, seized and closed sixteen websites that have granted access to Internet pirated Internet game baits of NFL on February 2, in action which is similar to the crackdown they had applied the previous year. For the first time, domains in the.tv top level domain were also confiscated, even though the TLD allocation was to Tuvalu.

With the Super Bowl Giants victory, they became the first team to win the Super Bowl in 4 different networks.

In the local market of the team, the game is also broadcast by NBC stations in New York City and Boston markets, WNBC 4 in New York City, New York and WHDH 7 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Ads

All the ads for games were sold out on Thanksgiving 2011, with an average price of $ 3.5 million per thirty seconds of advertising, by far the highest rate for Super Bowl ads in the event's history. At least one thirty-second ad ordered $ 4 million.

Pro-life activist Randall Terry says he plans to run an ad featuring fetal graphics photos that were aborted during Super Bowl XLVI. Terry is not allowed to broadcast national ads, given that the network has a policy under the same time rules to deny all political related ads and issues during the Super Bowl. He is capable, however, under the current Federal Commission's "Entrance" rules, to force up to 35 local stations (located in countries where Prime Democrats are within 45 days of the Super Bowl Sunday; Terry enters the lead as a puppet candidate especially for the purpose of this ad) to run an ad without censorship, regardless of whether it meets Federal Standards and Practices or Federal Communications Commission guidelines. The FCC decided against Terry on February 3, two days before the game, when NBC owned and operated by WMAQ-TV in Chicago refused to broadcast the ad, citing the same time law and the fact that Terry did not appear to be a bona fide candidate . The largest station that allows Terry to air its ad is WHDH in Boston, Massachusetts.

An advertisement from Pepsi featuring Melanie Amaro, the winner of the first season of Fox's The X Factor series. Other confirmed advertisers include Doritos (continuing the user-generated "Crash the Super Bowl" contest), Bridgestone, Volkswagen (60 second-generation Beetle ad show featuring a dog bark for "The Imperial March"), General Motors (four for Chevrolet, including ads featuring "We Are Young" by fun, causing massive sales spikes, and one for Cadillac), Toyota, Hyundai, Acura (featuring Jerry Seinfeld in ads for NSX), Kia Motors (advertise Optima with starring Adriana Lima), Audi (parodying the Twilight series with ads for S7), Honda (starring Matthew Broderick in retaliation for the lead role in Ferris Bueller's Day Off) new Dannon Yogurt and Century 21 Real Estate, Teleflora, Mars, Incorporated (introducing brown M & M spokesmen), CareerBuilder.com (repeat their chimpanzee ad campaign), Cars.com, Skechers, Rela tivity Media (runs four ads for Act of Valor ), Paramount Pictures, Walt Disney Pictures, and Universal Pictures. Anheuser-Busch had bought nine slots during the game. An advertisement for Priceline.com supposedly killed "Priceline Negotiator", which will end William Shatner's role as a company spokesperson (a role he has held for more than a decade), to pave the way for a new campaign that will premier during the game; However, it was later revealed that the new campaign would defend Shatner. The ad for Old Milwaukee beer featuring Will Ferrell aired once on only one station in Nebraska.

Chrysler aired a half-minute advertisement twice titled "Half the Time in America", produced by the Wieden Kennedy agency and narrated by Clint Eastwood. The ad drew criticism from some prominent US conservatives, who suggested that his message implies that President Obama deserves a second term and, thus, is political retaliation for Obama's support for the company's federal bailout. Chrysler's chief marketing officer Olivier FranÃÆ'§ois and Chrysler Chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne denied that the advertisement was intended as a politically-oriented message. Overall, the ad is considered to be one of the better that aired during the game.

There are also some allegations about the possibility of plagiarism of Australian band John Butler Trio's song "Zebra" by Dannon's yogurt giant. A spokesperson for the band, Tom McNamara, commented that the band was exploring their property regarding the song's resemblance to the band's hit single.

Matthew Broderick repeats his Ferris Bueller Day Off role in a Honda commercial that aired during the Super Bowl featuring Oh Yeah's song. A teaser for the ad appeared two weeks before the Super Bowl, which has created rumors about a possible sequel to the movie. It was produced by Santa Monica based RPA and directed by Todd Phillips. Tim Nudd Adweek called the ad "a great tribute to the original 1986 film, with Broderick calling this time sick for filming and enjoying another day slack." On the other hand, Jalopnik ' s Matt Hardigree calls the place "immoral".

Live internationally

NFL International broadcast the game to audiences outside of North America, with Kenny Albert and Joe Theismann calling an English feed.

Radio

The Super Bowl XLVI was performed nationwide on radio through Dial Global radio network, with Kevin Harlan as a play-by-play announcer, Boomer Esiason as a color analyst, and James Lofton and Mark Malone as side reporters. Locally, the game is broadcast by New York Giants Radio Network (WFAN) and New New Patriots Radio Network flagship (WBZ-FM). Bob Papa called the game for the Giants with Carl Banks as analyst and Howard Cross as a side reporter, while Gil Santos was in the microphone for Patriots with Gino Cappelletti as analyst and Scott Zolak as a side reporter. Santos and Cappelletti return for their sixth Super Bowl as a broadcast team for the Patriots while Papa and Banks call the third and second Super Bowl, respectively, for the Giants. This is the first Super Bowl broadcast for the Giants not to feature old analyst Dick Lynch, who has retired from the team's radio booth after the 2007 season and died in 2008. As per the NFL rules, all other stations in the Giants and Patriots radio network (as well as WCBS-AM in New York, which serves as a preseason overflow station for the Giants) carries a Global Dial feed.

BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra produces its own radio broadcast, with Darren Fletcher, Rocky Boiman, and Greg Brady announcing.

Entertainment

Pregame

Indiana University Marching Hundred performed during a pre-match performance.

On January 12, 2012, it was reported that Kelly Clarkson's former American Idol winner will sing the National Anthem in Super Bowl XLVI. This marks the fourth time in five years that an American Idol contestant has performed the national anthem (joining Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Jordin Sparks). The husband and wife village musicians Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert performed "America the Beautiful" as part of the ceremony. The American Sign Language Translation for both songs is performed by Rachel Mazique, the now-defunct Miss Deaf America.

The coin toss ceremony featured recent applicants to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Curtis Martin, one of the inductees, was originally chosen to cast the coin, but in what NESN described as "a rather awkward scene", referee John Parry eventually flipped the coin itself while Martin stood beside and watched. The Patriots won the draw, the first AFC team to do so in the Super Bowl in 15 years. Because the coin toss landed on the head, Papa John's pizza chain offers free pizzas to the millions of Americans who participated in the promotional contest.

Countdown

Word has leaked as early as October 2011 that Madonna will be a player for the Super Bowl part-time event, with M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj appear as well; all three are featured in Madonna's new single "Give Me All Your Luvin" performed as part of the show. The league confirmed Madonna as a player on 4 December. Other collaborators on the project include LMFAO, Cee Lo Green, longtime collaborator Madonna Jamie King, Cirque du Soleil, and Moment Factory. M.I.A. was under controversy for giving the middle finger during the performance of "Give Me All Your Luvin '", which was caught by the broadcast feed. The attitude was given when he appeared to sing "I do not care", although it is difficult to hear clearly if the vow is said, stop short, or cut off, because the sensor failed to try to blur the screen to cover the movement. The setlist includes Egyptian-themed "Vogue" in costume by Givenchy, medley from Madonna's "Music" and LMFAO's two biggest hit ("Party Rock Anthem" and "Sexy and I Know It", with LMFAO singers remaining dressed completely, unlike in the video the music of the last song), followed by his new single "Give Me All Your Luvin", excerpts from "Open Your Heart" and "Express Yourself" (in duets with Green), and cover, "Like a Prayer", also featuring Green. Green and Shelton (who sang "America the Beautiful" as part of the pregame event) are both judges on the NBC TV series The Voice , which aired the network after the game. It broke the record for the most-watched Super Bowl show, beating Michael Jackson's previous record, with 114 million viewers worldwide.

Game summary

First quarter

The Patriot won a coin throw and was suspended. This ended the 14 Super Bowl row over a row where the NFC team won a coin throw.

New York opened the game with a drive to the Patriots 33-yard line, threatening to score the first goal. After giving the 19-yard reception to the wide-ranging Giants of Hakeem Nicks, the New England defense stepped in to prevent the score: defensive midfielder Brandon Deaderick fired Eli Manning for a 2-yard loss, then the Giants raced back Ahmad Bradshaw handled behind a struggling line at the blitz by Patriots cornerback Kyle Arrington. In third place, New England's final defender Mark Anderson sacked Manning, pushing the Giants out of the field and forcing the Giants.

New York got a boost from punter Steve Weatherford, whose 36-yard kick pinned Pats back to their own 6-yard line. At the first Patriot offensive attack, Tom Brady attempted to pass the action, but a heavy rush from defensive midfield Giants Justin Tuck forced a throw deep into the middle of the field, with no nearby receivers. Brady was marked for intentional grounding, and as he was in the final zone when he threw the pass, the result produced safety, giving New York a 2-0 lead. It was the first safety in the Super Bowl since the Arizona Cardinals scored one in the Super Bowl XLIII. After receiving a free kick, New York drove 78 yards in nine games - including a 24-yard key run by Ahmad Bradshaw - and boosted their lead to 9-0 on 2-yard touchdown bait Manning to wide receiver Victor Cruz.

On the next drive, Brady completes the pass to BenJarvus Green-Ellis for 7 yards, Deion Branch for 15, and Wes Welker for 19, moves the ball into the 31-yard Giants line.

Second quarter

New York managed to stop the drive in their own 11-yard line, but Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 29-yard field ball for New England's first scoring early in the second quarter.

The Giants trepidated on the next drive, then held the Patriots to a three-and-out. When New York's next drive stalled, Weatherford's 51-yard punter granted possession of Patriots on their 4-yard line. Brady, however, finished eight consecutive operands for 71 yards, and threw a 4-yard pass touchdown to run back Danny Woodhead, giving the Patriots a 10-9 first-half lead, the same halftime deficit that the Giants faced against the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl. XXI. The drive went for 14 plays and covered 96 yards, tying the record for the longest drive in the history of the Super Bowl.

Third quarter

New England took the second half of the kickoff and started out strongly: Brady completed a 21 yard pass to Chad Johnson (the only postseason reception), and two rushed by Green-Ellis up 25 yards to the 33-yard New York line. Brady finally completed an 8-play, 79-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass for a tight second-year Aaron Hernandez, boosting New England's lead to 17-9.

Starting the next drive of their own 35-yard line after 34-yard kickoff return Jerrel Jernigan, New York responded with a drive to the Patriots 20-yard line where Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes converted a 38-yard field goal, cutting the score to 17-12.

On the next drive, New York forced three-and-outs - including Justin Tuck Sack Brady on the third down - and Will Blackmon returned 43-yard field Zoltan Mesko 10 yards to the Patriots' 47-yard line. New York then pushed back into the scoring range on drives utilized by several different players, including a 12-yard reception by rarely using Bear Pascoe's tip to reach the New England 9-yard line. On the third down, however, the sack by New England Anderson and Rob Ninkovich forced New York to complete another Tynes field goal, scoring 17-15 with 35 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Fourth quarter

In the second game of the fourth quarter, the first turn of the game occurred when Giants midfielder Chase Blackburn picked up Brady's bait in the New York 8-yard line. New York then drove to the Patriots' 43-yard line, but stopped there and had to kick the ball. New England took the ball back in their own eight yards with less than ten minutes in the fourth quarter. With 4:06 remaining in the game, New England picked up the ball in the 44-yard line of the Giants on 2nd-and-11 and Tom Brady threw to Wes Welker who was not found. However, Brady's high bait and Welker can not kick it when it falls to the ground, greatly preventing big gains. New England's impulse stalled on the Giants' 44-yard line and they were forced to kick the ball, after which Brady's wife, Supermodel Gisele BÃÆ'¼ndchen, famously blamed Welker, said that her husband could not both "[T] hrow and catch the ball." TV footage of the game showed Bill Belichick urging his defense to focus on stopping Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks, and forcing the Giants to go to secondary options Mario Manningham and Pascoe.

The Giants take ownership of their own 12-yard line with 3:46 left in the game and one time runs out. In the first game, in what ended up being one of the key games of the game, Manning completed a deep bait along the left side to Manningham to earn a 38-yard into midfield. New England coach Bill Belichick challenged the catch but the call on the pitch stood up and it made him lose his first team time. Two more settlements from Manning to Manningham added 18 yards. Manning then completed a 14-yard pass to the Nicks in the 18-yard New England line on the two-minute memorial. Two later dramas, New England called their second timeout with 1:03 left after one yard running Bradshaw gave New York down 2 and a goal on the six-yard line.

With the Patriots descending to their final deadline and progressing by two points, 17-15, it is likely that the Giants will run the game to stop the goal line, which will force the Patriot to use that deadline to stop the clock on one of the last two dramas. The Giants could run the clock down, allowing Tynes - who does not lag under 30 yards in four years - to kick a winning field goal, and give the Patriots only about 20 seconds from the remaining game to score again. It also means that the Patriots can call defensive play where they will purposely allow the Giants to score, which despite giving up the lead will allow the Patriot to get the ball back with that time limit and with more time remaining. New England opted to let the New York score, unlocking its defense to let Bradshaw enter the final zone with the ball. In what was then called "maybe a weird game in the history of the Super Bowl", Bradshaw attempted to stop at the 1-yard line after realizing what the Patriots were doing, but the momentum forwards made it fall into the final zone for touchdown. The touchdown deliberately gave up giving the Patriots 57 seconds to score again, and they got into their last drive left behind with a count of 21-17 after the Giants failed to convert the two-point play.

The final drive game starts on the 20-yard line of New England. Brady's first two bait falls were incomplete and then he was fired by Tuck in third, leaving Patriots 16 yards from the first down and forcing them to use their last timeout. Faced with heavy pressure in the pocket, Brady avoided linebacker Michael Boley and then threw a bullet into the Deion Branch. Branch catches the ball and runs out of bounds on the 33-yard line for the first down. The 11-yard finish from Brady to Hernandez advanced the ball to the Pats '44, followed by twelve men on the penalty area against the Giants, who moved the ball to 49 Patriots' with 9 seconds left. After an incomplete pass, Brady, in the final game, throws Hail Mary's Hail Mary directed to Hernandez in the final zone, but the ball is deflected by the Giants defender. Rob Gronkowski's tight end dove with his hand stretched out towards the ball but still a yard away as it touched the ground, ended the Super Bowl XLVI and gave New York their fourth Super Bowl victory in franchise history.

Statistical overview

For the Giants, Manning completed 30 of 40 passes for 296 yards, one touchdown, and no interception. Bradshaw is the top rusher of the game with 72 yards and touchdown, also capturing two bait for 19 yards. Nicks is the top recipient with 10 receptions for 109 yards. Blackburn, who had been cut by the Giants at the start of the season before being re-signed, had 6 total tackles and interception. Tuck made 3 tackles and two sacks. For New England, Brady completed 27 of 41 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception, becoming the first quarterback to throw a goal pass in five separate Super Bowls. The main target is Tight End/H-Back Aaron Hernandez, performing in a role similar to the one he played in Florida, catching 8 passes for 67 yards and one score. A 4-Round 2011 option, Hernandez's star performance in the game will only add to the tragedy when his career was cut short by a self-destructive spiral into a crime, resulting in his belief in 2013 over the killing of Odin Lloyd. Second-year Fellow TE Rob Gronkowski, who came to the Super Bowl XLVI battling a severe ankle injury, counted 2 catches for 26 yards and Welker, despite a notable drop, finished with 7 receptions for 60 yards and two brought for 21. Defending, linebacker Jerod Mayo and Brandon Spikes each have 8 tackles, 3 assists, and a forced fumble.

With the victory the Giants became the fifth team to win at least four Super Bowls, while the Patriots became the fourth to lose four. By then, Brady had never won at Lucas Oil Stadium and had not won a game at Indianapolis since 2007, when the Patriots defeated the Indianapolis Colts on their way to a perfect regular season. Belichick dropped to 3-2 as head coach at the Super Bowl, while Tom Coughlin won both Super Bowls in many experiments. Some news organizations, among them The St. Louis Post-Dispatch , said that their victory makes them the NFL version of the 2011 St Series World Champion Cardinal, saying that both of these championship teams have been given the last rites by many towards the end of the season, emerging as champions at the end of the season. Eli Manning became (and still remains) the only quarterback to throw over 4,900 yards and win the Super Bowl in the same season.

The Giants became the first team to win Super Bowl games that aired on all four US national networks (CBS, ABC, FOX, and now NBC).

The Giants and Patriots being the 3rd and 4th teams (after Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers) appeared in the Super Bowl in four different decades (both in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s ) and the second and third appear in Super Bowls in four consecutive decades (joining Pittsburgh Steelers). The Giants became the first team in the history of the Super Bowl to win the Super Bowl in four different decades (1986, 1990, 2007, 2011). The Patriots became the first team in the history of the Super Bowl to lose the Super Bowl in four different decades (1985, 1996, 2007, 2011).

And Shaughnessy says in a piece on The Boston Globe about Boston's loss to the Giants under the heading, "History of Repeating": "Instead of celebrating grand slam-championships in every major sport for a period of four years and four months, the British just spewing their broken pieces of luck, preparing for an avalanche of sadness from New York, they're very jealous. "

The Giants go to half behind 10-9. The Giants have been left behind in the first half in all their Super Bowl appearances, trailing 10-9 to the Broncos, 12-10 to Bills, 10-0 to Ravens, and 7-3 to the Patriots.

It will be the fourth time in five gigantic Super Bowl appearances they have faced their previous AFC opponents during the regular season. In every season where the Giants have won the Super Bowl, they have faced their previous Super AFC bowl colleagues during the regular season.

The Giants are now 4-0 at the Super Bowl where Bill Belichick has been on the sidelines. Belichick is the Giants defense coordinator for their first two victories at the Super Bowl, and an opponent head coach in their last two games. Three Giants victories came against the AFC East team, with the Giants defeating both Buffalo Bills and Patriots twice.

The Giants continued their winning streak in the road playoff game with their victory at the Super Bowl XLVI. The team won every playoff game they played away from their home stadium (Giants Stadium and MetLife Stadium) from 2007-2011. Before this run, the last time the Giants were defeated in a match away from Meadowlands was in 2006, when they were beaten by the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round. This streak ended in a 2016-17 NFL playoff, in which the Giants were defeated 38-13 by the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in the Wild Card. Two street playoff victories during the Giants streak this took place in Lambeau.

This is the second Super Bowl, after Super Bowl X, resulting in a final score of 21-17 with a winning score including safety and an extra point missed as part of a total of 21 points (though in this case it is a failed 2-point attempt while in the previous case it was blocked kick).

This is the 5th set of teams to have a rematch in Super Bowl history and the whole sixth rematch. The others are Miami Dolphins and Washington Redskins, who meet in Super Bowl VII and Super Bowl XVII; Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers, who meet in Super Bowl X, Super Bowl XIII, and Super Bowl XXX and are the only teams that meet in the Super Bowl more than twice; San Francisco 49ers and Cincinnati Bengals, who met at Super Bowl XVI and Super Bowl XXIII; and Cowboys and Buffalo Bills, who met on Super Bowl XXVII and Super Bowl XXVIII and were the only teams facing each other in two consecutive Super Bowls; and then the Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles became the 6th team to have a rematch in Super Bowl history and 7 overall, meet in Super Bowl LII after previously meeting at Super Bowl XXXIX.
