In cosmetics, skin toner or just toner refers to a lotion or wash designed to cleanse the skin and shrink the pores, usually used on the face. Toner can be applied to the skin in various ways:
- On wet cotton. (This is the most used method.)
- Spray to face.
- Apply a tonic gauze face mask - a piece of gauze is covered with toner and left on the face for a few minutes.
Users often apply moisturizer after the toner dries.

This is the lightest type of toner; they contain water and humectants such as glycerin, and little if any alcohol (0-10%). Humectants help keep moisture in the top layer of the epidermis by preventing it from evaporating. A popular example of this is rose water.
This toner is the softest for the skin, and is best suited for use on dry, dehydrated, sensitive and normal skin. This can give a burning sensation on sensitive skin.
Skin tonic
It is slightly stronger and contains less alcohol (up to 20%), water and humectant. Orange water is an example of skin tonic. Skin tonic is suitable for use on normal, combination, and oily skin.
Astringents
It is the strongest form of toner and contains a high proportion of alcohol (20-60%), antiseptic ingredients, water, and humectant. These can irritate and damage the skin as they can remove excess lipid protective as well as protein denaturation in the skin when a high percentage of alcohol is used.
