Eucalyptol is a natural organic compound that is a colorless liquid. This is the cyclic and monoterpenoid ether.
Eucalyptol juga dikenal dengan berbagai sinonim: 1,8-cineol, 1,8-cineole, cajeputol, 1,8-epoxy- p -menthane, 1,8-oxido- p -mentan, eucalyptol, eucalyptole, 1,3,3-trimethyl-2-oxabicyclo [2.2.2] oktan, cineol, cineole.
In 1870, F. S. Cloez identified and named the eucalyptol to the dominant part of the oil Eucalyptus globulus .

Composition
Eucalyptol comprises up to 90 percent of the volatile oil of several species of generic Eucalyptus oil products, hence the common name of the compound. It is also found in laurel camphor, bay leaf, tea tree, sweet basil, wormwood, rosemary, common sage, Cannabis sativa and other aromatic plant foliage. Eucalyptol with purity from 99.6 to 99.8 percent can be obtained in large quantities by fractional distillation of eucalyptus oil.
Although it can be used internally as flavoring and medicinal ingredients with very low doses, typical of many essential oils (essential oils), eukaliptol is toxic if digested at higher than normal doses.

Properties
Eucalyptol has a fresh mint-like flavor and a spicy and cooling flavor. It is not soluble in water, but can be mixed with ether, ethanol, and chloroform. The boiling point is 176 à ° C and the flash point is 49 à ° C. Eucalyptol forms crystalline adducts with hydrohalic acid, o -cresols, resorcinol, and phosphoric acid. This stirring formation is useful for purification.
Usage
Flavor and fragrance
Due to its pleasant scent and spicy flavor, eucalyptol is used in flavorings, fragrances, and cosmetics. Cineole-based cinnamon oil is used as flavoring at low levels (0.002%) in various products, including baked goods, confectionery, meat and beverage products. In a 1994 report released by five leading tobacco companies, eucalyptol was listed as one of the 599 additives for cigarettes. It is said that it is added to enhance the taste.
Medication
Eucalyptol is an ingredient in many brands of mouthwash and cough suppressant, as well as an active ingredient in body powder.
Insecticides and repellent
Eucalyptol is used as an insecticide and a mosquito coil.
In contrast, eucalyptol is one of many compounds that appeal to males of various species of orchid bees, which collect chemicals to synthesize pheromones; this is usually used as a bait to pull and collect these bees for study. One such study with Euglossa imperialist species, the non-social species of orchid bees, has shown that the presence of cineole (also eucalyptol) improves territorial behavior and specifically attracts male bees. It is even observed that these males periodically leave their territory in search of chemicals such as cineole, which are considered essential to attract and mate with females, to synthesize pheromones.
Toxicology
In higher-than-normal doses, eucalyptol is harmful through consumption, skin contact, or inhalation. It can have acute health effects on behavior, respiratory tract, and nervous system. Acute oral LD ââ 50 is 2480Ã,Ã mg/kg (rat). It is classified as a reproductive toxin for women and a suspected reproductive toxin for men.
