Note: This list does not include fire extinguishers, tools and equipment used by firefighters. Please refer to the Glossary of firefighting equipment for these terms. Similarly, although there is a lot of overlap, you may also want to refer to the Glossary of wild fire terms for specific terminology for that type of firefighter.
Note: Many of the terms defined here, particularly those relating to work systems, team names, procedures, careers and policies, appear to originate in the US and should not apply to other countries that use English and services rescue. For example, Call Firefighter (USA) and Defended Fire Brigade (English).

Fire fighting jargon includes a wide variety of lexicons of common and idiosyncratic terms. One of the problems that exist in trying to create a list like this is that many of the terminology used by certain departments are specifically defined in their stand-alone operating procedures, so the two departments may have completely different terms for the same. For example, depending on who is required, the security team may be referred to as standby, RIT or RIG or RIC (team/group/rapid intervention crew), or FAST (firefighter and search team). In addition, the department can change the definition in its SOP, so a year may be RIT, and RIG or RIC next.
