Histori

Mount Vernon began as a settlement near Fanning Springs (on Holbrook Street south of the town square). The declaration filed to establish the right to land immediately after the Texas Revolution documented the settlement by squatters in Spanish Texas beginning in 1818.

In 1848 the United States government established a post office, and in 1849 an official city site was put on land donated by Stephen and Rebecca Keith to the town of Mount Vernon. Since there were two other Vernon Mountains in Texas, the post office was called "Keith" and then "Lone Star" before the name "Mount Vernon" was available in 1875. Franklin County was carved out of Titus County in 1875, and Mount Vernon was elected a county seat in competition with other communities.

The region's economy is based on agriculture with maize and cotton, followed by over 500,000 peach trees produced in the 1920s, watermelons in the 1930s, and the country's highest record production of cane syrup in the 1940s. The discovery of oil in 1936 in C.G. The land of Hughes in the north of the county leads to a more diversified economy, with oil production continuing today combined with light industry, manufacturing, and diverse farming efforts. Mount Vernon, as the seat district, is assured of a sustainable vital existence as an economic hub for the region. The city boasts churches, doctors, lawyers, and many shops vary in time before people have the ability to travel long distances. The city chose to join in 1910 under the form of mayor/government council. In 1911, the issue of bonds was passed to create public waterways. Electrical and gas utility services follow.

The downtown area reflects the atmosphere of a small town. The central plaza has a beautiful gazebo and park bench. On the north side of the square is a classic revival of white limestone 1912 with a clock tower. The courthouse recently underwent extensive restoration as part of the Texas Historical Heritage Preservation Program and has been restored to its splendor in 1912.

History abounds in and around Mount Vernon. More than 50 houses built before World War I still stood around the city and were marked with signs pointing to the original owners and years of development. The tour maps are available at various locations including the Franklin County Historical Association Museum, the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, and Mount Vernon City Hall. There are more than 20 official state markers in Franklin County. The Cherokee trail runs along the eastern edge of the southern area toward Nacogdoches. The Choctaw line crosses the area to Dallas. The Bankhead highway remains as Mount Vernon Main Street.
