Mount Vernon is a city in Franklin County, Texas, United States. This is the territory of Franklin County, and the population is 2,662 at the 2010 census, up from 2,286 at the 2000 census.

Mount Vernon began as a settlement near Fanning Springs (on Holbrook Street south of the town square). The declaration filed to establish the right to land immediately after the Texas Revolution documented the settlement by squatters in Spanish Texas beginning in 1818.
In 1848 the United States government established a post office, and in 1849 an official city site was put on land donated by Stephen and Rebecca Keith to the town of Mount Vernon. Fire Station Museum - Housed in a 1940-funded fire station, transforming exhibits from a permanent collection including nature and featuring the history of butterflies, birds' eggs, violins, toys, clamshells, antique tools, woodcarvings , and Native American artifacts. Teeth chair and equipment ever used by Dr. Con Smith on Mount Vernon on display. The upstairs exhibits include a collection of bird eggs and native American artefacts from Franklin County and other parts of Texas and a collection of butterflies. This museum is one of only 13 museums holding an egg from an extinct Carolina parapet, chicken farmer, and passenger pigeon. Bankhead Highway Visitor Center - The Bankhead Highway, which opened in 1919 and ran from Washington D.C. to San Diego, is the country's first continental highway. It passes through Franklin County and serves as Mount Vernon Main Street and follows an early Indian trading route known as the Choctaw Line. In 1930, the number was numbered as U. S. No. 1 and called "The Broadway of America." The Bankhead Toll Road route was changed in 1937 and follows the current US Hwy 67. The Visitor Center is a quarter of a mile west of US Highway 37 in CR NW 1017. Just follow Main Street to the west past Highway 37. Visitors Center includes Lowry Pavilion, available for rent for special outdoor events, and the Dupree Trail Nature Reserve and Nature Park, a mile and a half walk through the property with a station marked specifically to see birds. Old Mount Vernon Waterworks Plant - Located on Holbrook Street just south of the junction with Rutherford Street, the first facility was built in 1911. Will Godwin, entomologist with Stephen F. Austin State University, and Steve Moore, the current Michener Fellow with the University of Texas, are restoring the facility.

The Art Alliance of Franklin County - The Art Alliance operates the Old Prison Art Museum (immediately behind the courthouse in the town square) and the Arts and Culture Center (on the corner of Rusk and Dallas Streets, one block west of the alun- town square). The Old Jail Art Museum has transformed the visual art exhibit as well as the permanent collection that is on display on the upper floors of the former 1912 prison which also includes the original cell blocks of historical importance. Franklin County Library - The need for community libraries was first raised by the local women's group Mount Vernon Key Club in January 1977. In March, community volunteers took office space provided by First National Bank now serves as an office for the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce), and opens a library for donations including books, furniture, and cash. Little Creek Park - Host & amp; Ms. N. E. Dupree donated approximately 4.2 acres of land to the Mount Vernon City in July 1958 for the love and respect they have for the city youth and the surrounding community for garden-making. The park consists of tennis courts, basketball courts, 2 play areas, a baseball field, a covered pavilion for family and social gatherings, and walking trails. Lake Cypress Springs - Franklin County is home to the spring-fed Lake Cypress Springs and is a fisherman's fishing paradise. It is surrounded by 869 acres of public parks owned and managed by Franklin County Water District. Campsites, shelters and meeting pavilions are located in parks on the lake, as well as a marina with water play equipment. Lake Cypress Springs was confiscated in 1970 with 3,400 hectares of top fishing water. Walleye stocked in the early days of the lake with some success. Geography
Mount Vernon is located in the center of Franklin County on 33Ã, Â ° 10? 55? N 95 Â ° 13? 27? W (33.181890, -95.224147). The US 67 route passes the north side of the city as Main Street, heading east 16 miles (26 km) to Mount Pleasant and west 23 miles (37 km) to Sulfur Springs. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the city, the population is spread by 27.0% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% years or more. The mean age is 36 years. For every 100 females, there are 87.1 males. For every 100 women age 18 and over, there are 81.8 men.

Famous citizen
The late Don Meredith, a former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and broadcaster Monday Night Football, is a native of Mount Vernon. Also from Mt. Vernon is a 13-year-old senior AFL/NFL midfielder, Bobby Maples. Maples play for Houston Oilers, Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos. Although not original, retired NBA player Greg Ostertag currently lives on a small farm in Mount Vernon and has several businesses in the historic square.
