Oil analysis (OA) is a laboratory analysis of lubricant properties, suspended contaminants, and disposable debris. OA is performed during routine predictive maintenance to provide meaningful and accurate information about the condition of the lubricant and the machine. By tracking the analysis of oil samples over the life of a given machine, trends may be established that can help eliminate costly improvements. The study of wear and tear in the machine is called tribology. Tribologists often conduct or interpret oil analysis data.

OA can be divided into three categories:

  1. analysis of oil properties including lubricants and their additives,
  2. contaminant analysis,
  3. analysis of used debris from machine,

Oil sampling

Oil sampling is a procedure for collecting liquid volume from a lubricant or hydraulic machine for oil analysis purposes. Just like collecting forensic evidence at a crime scene, when collecting oil samples, it is important to ensure that procedures are used to minimize sample noise during and after the sampling process. The oil sample is usually drawn into a clean small bottle that is sealed and sent to the laboratory for analysis.

History

OA was first used after World War II by the US railroad industry to monitor locomotive health. In 1946, the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad research labs managed to detect the problem of diesel engines through metal wear analysis of used oil. A key factor in their success is the development of a spectrograph, an instrument that replaces some wet chemical methods to detect and measure individual chemical elements such as iron or copper. This practice was quickly accepted and widely used throughout the railway industry.

By 1955 OA has matured to the point that the United States Bureau of Naval Weapons embarked on a major research program to adopt metal wear analysis for use in the prediction of aircraft component failures. These studies form the basis for the Joint Oil Analysis Program (JOAP) involving all branches of the US Armed Forces. The JOAP results prove conclusively that the increase in component wear can be confirmed by detecting an appropriate increase in the metal content of the lubricating oil. In 1958 Pacific Intermountain Express (P.I.E.) was the first trucking company to set up a used oil analysis laboratory to control the maintenance costs of vehicles managed by Bob Herguth. In 1960, the first independent commercial oil analysis laboratory was started by Edward Forgeron in Oakland, CA.

Standard Practice

In addition to monitoring oil contamination and metal wear, the use of modern OA includes an additive analysis in oil to determine whether extended disposal intervals can be used. Maintenance costs can be reduced by using OA to determine the residual life of additives in oil. By comparing the results of new and used OA oils, a tribologist can determine when oil should be replaced. Careful analysis may even allow the oil to be "sweetened" to its original additive level by adding fresh oil or adding additive that has been exhausted.

Analysts and analysts of oil analysis can obtain certification in accordance with ISO standards by passing exams organized by International Council for Machinery Lubrication (ICML).

The NDI/JOAP laboratory will establish oil analysis standards and intervals. AMU must deal with it.

A typical predictive maintenance technique is ferrography, which analyzes iron in oil.
