A tire converter is a machine used to help a tire technician down and install a tire with a car wheel. Once the wheels and tires are removed from the car, the tire changer has all the components needed to remove and replace the tires from the wheels. Different tire changers allow technicians to change tires on cars, motorcycles and heavy duty trucks. New tire and wheel technology has improved certain tire converters to be able to convert low-profile tires or run-flat tires.

The tire changer has two foot pedals. The left pedal is called the clamp control pedal, a three-position pedal that opens and closes the rim clamp. Once pressed, the pneumatic piston moves 4 rim clamps simultaneously or simultaneously. The right pedal is a table top pedal, which is a three-position pedal that controls the rotation of the top of the table. When the table top pedal is pressed down, the top of the table rotates clockwise. The top of the table rotates counter-clockwise as the pedal is raised.

Mount/demount mechanism

The swing arm moves left and right. The purpose of the swing arm is to move the duck head near or away from the rim. The last component of the mount/demount mechanism is the vertical slide. The vertical slide moves up and down so that the duck head can fit into the rim with different sized wheel widths. The vertical slide has a spring and locks the handle above the swing arm to adjust the duckhead and maintain a stable position around the rim.

Air pressure system

The air pressure system on the tire converter provides air to inflate tires mounted on wheels. The air pressure system consists of 4 components: air hose, air inflation gauge, inflation pedal and manual pressure valve. The air hose is located near the top of the tire changer, and allows compressed air to enter the tire. The special end is used on the air hose to clamp firmly into the valve rod from the wheel. The air inflation gauge displays the air pressure inside the tire when the air hose is connected to the valve rod. The air inflation gauge displays pressure in pounds per square inch (psi). Just below the air hose on the tire changer side is the inflation pedal that allows tire inflation. When the inflation pedal is raised, air bursts are released from the valve next to each rim brace towards the bottom of the tire to aid inflation. The manual exhaust valve is located next to the air hose and air inflation gauge. The manual exhaust valve allows manual release of air pressure from the tire.

Top clamps and reams

The top of the table and the rim hold and rotate the wheel to attach or lower the tire. The top of the table is just above the foot pedal and under the mount/demount mechanism. The top of the table can rotate clockwise and counterclockwise. The top of the table is formed as the letter "X", but can be a circle in various models of tire changer. At each end of the table, there is a pneumatic-powered rim clamp. The clip of the reams is moving in unison to secure the wheel onto the table. Each rim rim can be adjusted closer or farther from the center of the top of the table to accommodate smaller or larger wheels.

Beads ejection system

The loosening system of the bead releases the tire from the wheel rims. The bead easing system consists of the arms near the lower right side of the tire changer. There is a piece of shovel-shaped metal at the end of the arm called loosener bead shoes. The bead loosener shoe pivots and rounded to accommodate the shape of the wheel. At the top of the arm, there is a handle with the button above to engage the beads easing system. Across from a shovel-shaped metal cut, there is a rubber box to protect the wheel from scratches during the loosen procedure.

The following list provides an explanation of the operator installing the tires to the wheels using a tire converter.

  1. The operator centered the wheel and securely locked it onto the table with a rim mechanism with a narrow wheel end.
  2. The operator pushes the bead down first in the wheel well.
  3. The operator pushes the top bead into the center of the wheel under the duck's head and rotates the top of the table using the pedal over the table.
  4. The operator has a valve core installed.
  5. The operator slowly expands the tire until the bead "erupts" on the steering wheel beads.
  6. The operator releases the rim clamp and expands the tire to the manufacturer's specifications.

Other types of tire changer

Motor

Replacement motorcycle tires are less sophisticated than passenger cars and light trucks or heavy duty tire changers as they deal with smaller and lighter tires and wheels. Replacement motorcycle tires mainly provide simple manic easing systems and rim rims that are supported manually. Replacement of certain motorcycle tires can accommodate wheel diameters as small as 10 "and wheels at least 1-1/2" wide. In addition, small atv wheels and tires are used on motorcycle tire changers.

Heavy duty

Substitutes for heavy duty tires require larger equipment because these exchangers handle larger and heavier tires and wheels. The heavy duty tire changer can work with several wheels up to 56 inches in diameter and tires of 90.5 inches in diameter and 43 inches wide. Heavy duty tire changers are used for agricultural, off-road and construction vehicles. Today, however, a larger version of a heavy duty tire changer is designed to mount/tire up to 95 inches in diameter and also features a four-jaw mandibular jaw which operates hydraulically with a pinching jaw from 14 to 58 inches from either wheel in or out of the boring center.

Note that the truck changer tire is the first automated machine tool to remove tires from wheel rims, and was created and manufactured by May Brothers, Fred and George May (now deceased) from River Rouge and Taylor, (Detroit) Michigan. The May Brothers is also responsible for perfecting modern electric iron designs that we still use today (patents sold to Sears Roebuck for lifetime residues to Fred and Ann May (Fred's wife, 1910-2012) as well as creating and patenting devices that double the rod curtains.

Semi Automatic and Automatic Installation and Inflation

Higher volume manufacturers usually use special tires and mounting wheels and inflation equipment that are partly or completely automatic. Depending on the size of the tire, the machine can be a single station or multistage. In this machine, the tire is pumped using high volume, high pressure air pressure that flows into the tire around the bead tire rather than through the valve stem. When the tire has reached the desired inflation pressure, the engine inflation head moves away from the tire and the inflation process is complete.
