Toyota AZ engine family is a straight-4 piston engine series. The AZ series uses an aluminum engine block with a cast-iron cylinder liner and a DOHC aluminum cylinder head. The engine series features many advanced technologies including tilt combustion chamber, offset cylinder and crank center, and variable VVT-i variable valve input system. The aluminum machine measures 626 mm (25-in) in length, 608 mm (24-in) wide, and 681 mm (27-in) high.

The cylinder block is an open deck, die-cast aluminum die cast with cast iron liners and die-cast aluminum lower crankcase and magnetic pan oil. Crankshaft steel forging is fully balanced with eight counterweights and is supported by five main bearings. A helical gear pressed in the no. 3 moves the twisted-twist axle shaft at the home of the shaft in the lower crankcase.

The double overhead camshaft is driven by a single-level roller chain of 8.0 mm (0.3 inches), allowing a narrow valve angle that includes 27.5 Â °. Camshafts work on four valves per cylinder through a bucket tappet. As in Toyota's recent engine practice, no shim permission adjustments were used. The valve diameter is 34.0 mm (1.3 inches) for the intake and 29.5 mm (1.2 inches) for the exhaust, with 8.0 mm (0.3 inches) for intake and discard. The four-vvt-i VVT-i device is mounted on the intake camshaft, changing the time to 50 °. The valve cover is made of magnesium to save weight.

Fuel is injected sequentially through ultra-fine atomization injectors with twelve small injection holes, each 0.18 mm (0.01 inches). As with the smaller NZ machines, the new AZ adopts a plastic intake manifold, built-up, and welded vibration that integrates large volume plenum spaces (3.5 L (214 in 3 ) volume including 1.3 LL (79 in 3 ) resonator). Exhaust manifolds are tubular constructions with integrated catalytic converters.

Excessive oil consumption

The 2AZ-FE engine in Camry 2007-2009 can burn excess oil and get involved in this lawsuit. Other machines are also affected. 1AZ-FE

The 1AZ-FE is version 2.0Ã, L (1998Ã, cc). The output is 108 kW (145 hp) at 6000 rpm with a torque of 190 N m (140 bp) at 4000 rpm for the Camry Aurion version. The Rav4 and Ipsum engines are rated 148-150 hp (110-112 kW) at 6000 rpm and 142 lb torque? Ft (193Ã, N? M) at 4000 rpm.

1AZ-FSE

The 1AZ-FSE is version 2.0Ã, L (1998Ã, cc). Bore is 86.0 mm and 86.0 mm stroke, and compression ratio 10.5: 1. Output is 150 PS (110 kW, 148 hp) at 5700 rpm with 200? N? M (148? Lb? Ft) of torque at 4000 rpm. The 1AZ-FSE features a Toyota D-4 direct injection system.

2AZ-FE

The 2AZ-FE is the 2.4Ã,Â, L (2362Ã, cc) version created in Japan (Kamigo Factory and by Toyota Industries Corporation), in TMMK in the United States and also built in China for the Scion xB model option, obtain a total transfer of 2362 cc with 88.5 mm (3.5 inches) and 96.0 mm (3.8 inches), with a compression ratio of 9.6: 1. However, this latest 2AZ-FE model is the first to be rated under the new SAE J1349 standard. New standards usually produce more conservative numbers, although no definite comparison is available because they are never tested by the same standards. Rav 4 uses a different timing chain cover from the Camry, but can be interchangeable.

There are complaints of this engine "burning oil" in North America with a problem that started after 45k miles, though mostly after 60k-75k miles. The piston ring design has been identified as a problem. Toyota even issued TSB (Technical Services Bulletin) TSB # 0094-11 in August 2011 but refused to issue a general withdrawal. Also more convincing is reported as a head packing problem that 2AZ-FE aluminum block head bolts run out on the back of 3 central bolts (closest to the firewall). There are several ongoing class action lawsuits regarding this widespread problem. In January 2015, Toyota North America surrendered and issued a warrant extension notice (ZE7) for this issue. However, Toyota still insists that burning 1 liter of oil every 1,200 kilometers is "normal". This applies to Toyota North America vehicles only

The 2AZ-FSE is version 2.4Ã, L (2362Ã, cc). The bore is 88.5 mm and the stroke is 96.0 mm, and the compression ratio is 11.0: 1. The output is 163 PS (120 kW; 161 hp) at 5800 rpm with torque of 231? N? M (170Ã, lb? Ft) at 3800 rpm. 2AZ-FSE featuring Toyota D-4 direct injection system.

2AZ-FXE

The 2AZ-FXE is an Atkinson cycle variant of 2AZ-FE . It has the same holes and strokes, but the cams and pistons are unique. It has a physical compression ratio of 12.5: 1.

Large overlap valves lead to cylinder load reduction and reduce torque and power output, but efficiency increases. This combination makes 2AZ-FXE suitable for use only on hybrid vehicles, where peak torque and power demands can be fulfilled by electric motors and batteries.

Maximum output when used in the Camry hybrid is 211 hp (147 kW) at 6000 rpm with 108 lbÃ, Â · ft (257Ã, Â ° m) torque at 4400 rpm.
