Cooking Oil Recycling - SCARCE
src: www.scarce.org

Recycling of vegetable oil is increasingly being made to produce biofuel oil. In the UK, the collection of waste cooking oil is regulated by environmental agencies. All collections of waste cooking oil should be carried out by companies listed as waste carriers by environmental agencies. In each collection, waste transfer records are required and copies are kept by both parties for a minimum of 3 years. Waste transfer notes must contain:

The full details of the company about whom the waste is transferred to:

  • Their waste registration details
  • Complete details of who's trash is being transferred from
  • Date
  • Signature from both parties

The waste transfer note may be a hard copy or an electronic version. Here is an example of a waste diversion note currently used by a used cooking oil company in the UK.

Opportunities for businesses and consumers to recycle used cooking oil ("yellow grease") have increased. Used cooking oil can be refined into various types of biofuels used for power generation and heating. A significant benefit is that biofuels derived from recycled cooking oil are usually burnt clean, have low carbon content and do not produce carbon monoxide. It helps people to reduce their carbon footprint. Recycled cooking oil also provides a form of income for the restaurant, which is sometimes compensated by recycled cooking oil for the deep fryer oil they use. Cooking cooking oil also produces waste oil discharged in the sewer, which can clog sewerage channels due to fat accumulation and should be collected there as "brown fat" by oil traps.

Purification of vegetable oils is the process of turning vegetable oil into fuel by hydrocracking or hydrogenation. Hydrocracking breaks the larger molecules into smaller molecules using hydrogen while hydrogenation adds hydrogen to the molecule. This method can be used for the production of gasoline, diesel, and propane. The resulting diesel fuel has various names including green diesel or renewable diesel.

In the past oil waste was collected by pig farmers as part of the leftover food from pig bins. The fat is taken from the flushing tanks and sold for further processing, while the remaining residue is processed into pork food.
