The Audi A5 is a series of executive coupe cars manufactured by German carmaker Audi since March 2007. The A5 series also consists of coupe, cabriolet, and "Sportback" (four door fastback features such as roofline with rear window which is sharply clawed with integrated luggage lid) Audi A4 version saloon and estate model.

Under Audi's internal platform numbering convention, A5 is a member of the B-platform vehicle suite, sharing its platform allotment with A4 saloon and Avant . The first generation A5 ( Type 8T ) is therefore a family member of B8 , while the second generation model 2016 is based on B9 . Both are derived from the Volkswagen MLB architecture (Modular Longitudinal Matrix).

First generation (2007-2016)

Initial release

The A5 marks Audi's return to the entry-level luxury coupe market since the B50-based B50 coupas model (B3/B4) ended production in 1996. On May 10, 2006, Audi confirmed that the A5 will go into production. The B6/B7 A4 spawn a convertible variant but not coupà ©. For the fourth generation A4 (B8), Audi decided to play the cabriolet, along with a new coupÃÆ' © and 4-door sportback sedan, to its own nameplate as the A5.

The A5 is the first of the B8 family of vehicles to be released (the other is the A4 and Q5 crossover SUVs), all based on the Audi MLP (Modular Longitudinal Platform) platform that supports the next generation A6 and A8.

A5 is the third coupà © in the Audi line up, following the second generation TT and R8. The A5 design elements adopted from the Nuvolari quattro concept car. The A5 debuted with a 3.2 liter FSI V6 engine delivering 195Ã, kW (265Ã, PS; 261Ã, hp).

CoupÃÆ'Â © (8T3)

The design is based on the Nuvolari quattro concept car. Both the Audi A5 and S5 CoupÃÆ' Â © models were launched simultaneously at Salon International de l'Auto (Geneva) and Melbourne International Motor Shows on March 6, 2007.

The A5 and S5 sequencing began on March 6, 2007 and the first shipment was made in June 2007. The launch model included 3.2 FSI V6 engine multitronic and 3.0 TDI quattro 6-speed, with 1.8 TFSI available in fall 2007.

Early US models include quattro A5 3.2 FSI and S5 4.2 FSI quattro coupe. Both include a six-speed manual or a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. The S5 model went on sale in November 2007, only equipped with a manual transmission, while the A5 and Tiptronic went on sale in early spring of 2008.

The Canadian model went on sale in 2008. The launch models include the A5 3.2 FSI with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed Tiptronic transmissions. Since 2011, only 2.0 L Turbo engine is available for A5 in Canada. In 2013 Audi introduced the new A5 Black Edition.

Cabriolet (8F7) (2009- )

Both the Audi A5 and S5 Cabriolet (convertible/cabriolet) production began in early 2009. The A5 Cabriolet includes a cloth roof as opposed to a retractable hardtop as in Volkswagen Eos. The engine range is the same as the contemporary coupà © A5 model, but the S5 Cabriolet comes with 3.0 V6 supercharged 3.0 TFSI engine.

The A5 Cabriolet replaces the A4 Cabriolet. A5 Cabriolet shipments began in the second quarter of 2009. The vehicle was unveiled at the 2009 New York Auto Show.

The A5 and S5 Cabriolet US versions went on sale in September 2009 as a 2010 model. Early models include multitronic A5 2.0 I4 TFSI, A5 2.0 quattro Tiptronic, S5 quattro S Tronic.

Sportback (8TA)

The A5 Sportback has four frameless doors and a long fastback, tapering like a roofline, gives the impression of a "four-door coupÃÆ' © like". While it shares many exterior cues with coupà © A5, the Sportback interior is similar to the A4 saloon; Although all A5 models have the same platform with the A4, Sportback is closer in design to the A4 than the rest of the A5 family.

The Sportback has been described as "a front-end saloon (including an identical S-line display) and taillights of coupà © A5 but A4 wheelbase", with Sportback positioned more as a "designer car" compared to a more conventional A4 saloon.

Sportback models are available in Europe, Japan, South Korea, China, Australia, New Zealand, Middle East, Mexico, Argentina and South Africa. Although originally not sold in the United States and Canada, the A5 Sportback entered the North American market as a 2018 model in early 2017.

Early production models include 2.0 TFSI quattro 155 kW (211 PS, 208 hp), 3.2 quattro FSI, 2.0 TDI 125 kW (170 PS; 168 hp) with six speed manual gearbox and start/stop system 2.7 TDI, 3.0 TDI quattro. The production version went on sale in September 2009.

A5 Sportback is available with two petrol engines or three diesel engines.

S5 (2007 -)

The Audi S5 is released in coupÃÆ' Â © to the public at the same time as A5. Audi S5, compared to A5, features different fascia (like most models of Audi S and RS), including LED daytime running string around the bien Xenon headlamps and vertical chrome grille.

In many markets, the S5 is included as standard, 19-inch alloy wheels with five parallel speaking designs, larger brakes, heated leather sports chairs, and other comfort features, some of which are only available as an option on the A5. Changes for the 2010 model year include LED tail lights, introduction of Premium Plus and Prestige trim levels, and new optional equipment such as Leather/Alcantara seats.

Despite sharing the same nameplate, the powertrains differ between the coupà © and the Cabriolet/Sportback for the 2010-12 model year. The Audi S5 2010-12 has a 4.2 liter fuel stratified injection (FSI) V8 engine that produces 260 kW (349 hp), while the S5 Cabriolet and Sportback have a 3.0 liter TFSI V6 supercharged engine that produces 245 kW (329 hp) with the 2010 Audi S4 3.0 TFSI quattro sedan and avant.

Coupà © has a choice of either a six-speed manual or a six-speed Tiptronic, while the Cabriolet/Sportback has a dual-clutch S-tronic seven-speed transmission.

RS5 (2010-2015)

Available in coupe body, the RS5 has a 4.2 FSI engine with a rating of 450 PS (331 kW; 444 hp) @ 8250 rpm and 430Ã, N? M (317.15Ã, lb? Ft) @ 4000-6000rpm, coupled with seven speed S tronic transmission and a permanent quattro all-wheel drive with a differential crown-gear center and electronic torque vectoring. It has 19-inch alloy wheels in an exclusive five-arm structure design with 275/35 tires (optional 19-inch winter wheels), 365 mm (14.37 inch) aluminum brake discs (optional 380 mm (14.96 inches) brake carbon diameter ceramic front disc), aluminum 8 piston brake calipers with RS logo in high-gloss black, electronic stabilization program with integrated sports mode, speed dependent servotronik steering, Audi select drive with three (4 with MMI navigation system) operation mode (convenience, automatic , and dynamic, custom optional), and optional dynamic steering.

Aesthetically, the RS5 has a single frame grid with gray glossy gray gray gray pattern, Xenon plus headlights with daylighted LED sweep strips, redesigned bumper shrinks downward into splitters, swung fenders inspired by Audi quattro , side sills with corner cap, trim strip with aluminum display on lattice one frame and near side window and outer mirror; a choice of 8 body colors, two oval exhaust pipes integrated inside the bumper, the spoiler in the tailgate automatically extends at 120 km/h (75 mph) and retracts at 80 km/h (50 mph), the underside of the modified car body integrates ventilation air for seven speed S tronic and front brakes.

In the cockpit, this model features an electrically adjustable sports chair in an upholstered leather/Alcantara combination with side and integrated head restraints (optional bucket seats with more prominent contours and folding folds, ventilated and comfortable seats with climate controlled layers, optional seat seats featuring special skin and color as well as silver headlining), leather-covered steering wheel, black gauge with white letter and typical scale, driver information system with integrated lap timer and oil temperature gauge, black interior with ornamental decoration made of carbon fiber (optional dark stainless-steel mesh, black piano finish or aluminum brushed inlay), fascia instrument panel in piano finish, pedal, footrest, button controls of optional 'MMI navigation system' in aluminum; door handles with two thin strips, aluminum inserts on door trim and RS 5 logo, optional suede controls and floor mats RS 5 logo pads, sport exhaust system with sound flaps and black exhaust trim.

Carbon design packages are available for engine compartments and, for vehicle bodies. The Styling package includes a black or matt aluminum display.

The RS 5 weighs 1,800 kg (3.968Â £), with 56.3 percent up front and 43.7 behind which makes it vulnerable to understeer, but Audi has added two electro-mechanical systems to counter the weight of its nose. The stability control system tries to stop the front-end plow before it happens by pressing the brakes on the inner wheels that effectively pull the tire enough to pull the car into a corner.

RS5 also has an active rear differential that can split the power between the rear wheels to create the same effect, or even oversteer; Under normal conditions, the quattro all wheel drive delivers 60% of the engine torque to the rear and rises to as much as 85 percent depending on conditions.

According to Quattro GmbH head Stephan Reil, the 4.2 FSI engine is based on the 5.2 FSI V10 Audi engine (found in Audi D3 S8 and Audi R8) with two cylinders removed.

The vehicle was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. Sales of Audi RS 5 begins in spring 2010.

Litigation

Audi has problems with oil consumption in model engines between 2009 and 2011. More than 200 car owners in Switzerland are also affected. In Switzerland, cars have less than 100,000 kilometers (62,000 mi) and under five years will have hardware replaced and paid for by Audi. If the car is between 100,000 and 200,000 kilometers (62,000 and 124,000 mi) and under five years, Audi fully pays the hardware but only half the work. Second generation (2016-present) h2>
