Automotive oil recycling involves recycling used oil and manufacturing new products from recycled oils, and includes recycling of motor oil and hydraulic oil. Oil recycling also benefits the environment: increasing opportunities for consumers to recycle oil reduces the possibility of using used oil on land and in waterways. For example, a gallon of motor oil discharged into a water can potentially contaminate one million gallons of water.

Recycled motor oils can be burned as fuel, usually in plant boilers, heating, or industrial heating applications such as blast furnaces and cement kilns. Recycled motor oils can be refined into diesel fuel or marine fuel in a process similar to oil refineries, but without a final hydrotreating process. The lubricating properties of motor oil survive, even in used oil, and can be recycled indefinitely.

Oil refinery recycling is the process of returning used oil to new oil by removing chemical impurities, heavy metals and dirt. Used Industrial and automotive oils are recycled at refineries. The oil used is first tested to determine the suitability for purification, after which dehydration and distillate water are treated before being released into the environment. Dehydration also removes the residual light fuel that can be used to drive the distillation, and also captures ethylene glycol for reuse in the recycled antifreeze.

Furthermore, industrial fuel is separated from the oil used then vacuum distillation removes the lubricant piece (ie, suitable fraction for reuse as lubricating oil) leaving heavy oil containing used oil additives and other by-products such as asphalt enlarger.. The lubricant is subsequently subjected to hydro treat, or catalytic hydrogenation to remove the residual polymer and other chemical compounds, and saturate the carbon chain with hydrogen for better stability.

The final oil separation, or fractionation, separates the oil into three different levels of oil: A light viscosity lubricant suitable for general lubricant applications, low viscosity lubricants for industrial and automotive applications, and high viscosity lubricants for heavy duty applications. The oil produced in this step is referred to as base oil re-refined (RRBL).

The final step is to incorporate additives into these three levels of oil products to produce the final product with the correct detergent and anti-friction quality. Then each product is tested again for quality and purity before it is released for sale to the public.
