The Chrysler 300 "series letter" is a high performance private luxury car built by Chrysler in the US from 1955-1965. After the initial year, named C-300, 1956 the car was designated 300B. Years of successive models were given the next letter of the alphabet as skipping "i", reaching 300L by 1965, after which the model was dropped.

The 300 "letter series" car is among the vehicles focused on the performance built by US domestic manufacturers after World War II, and thus can be considered one of the muscle car ancestors, albeit full-sized and more expensive.

The automaker began using 300 more designations for the luxury-performance sedan, using a 300M nameplate from 1999 to 2004, and expanded the 300 series with a new V8-powered 300C, the top model of the new Chrysler 300 line, a new rear-wheel drive car launched in 2004 for the 2005 model year. Unlike the first "letter series" series, successive variants do not have a standard engine that produces at least 300 hp (220 kW), except for Chrysler's top 300C models.

1955 C-300

The first of these letter series cars has no letters, but retroactively can be regarded as '300A'. The 'C-' designation is applied to all Chrysler models; But for marketing purposes, the numerical series skipped over 225 forward numbers sequentially to further strengthen the 300 bhp ranking. 300 originally stood for a 300 hp (220 kW) engine. The C-300 is really a race car intended for NASCAR circuits sold for roads for homologation purposes, with the most powerful Chrysler engine, 331 cu in (5.4Ã, L) FirePower "Hemi" V8, due to the hemispheric shape of the combustion chamber , equipped with a twin 4-barrel carburetor, a racing-profiled camshaft setup, solid valve lifters, rigid suspension, and exhaust system performance. By 1956 it would be the first American production car to top 355 hp (265 kW), and the letter series was for years the most powerful cars produced in the United States.

The "Advanced Forward" style of the car can be attributed to Chrysler's part as the designer of Virgil Exner. The front clip, including the grille, was taken from Imperial in the same year, but the rest of the car did not look like Imperial. The center of the body is from the hardtop New Yorker, with the rear quarter of Windsor. Exner also includes a basic Chrysler bumper model and eliminates many exterior elements such as back-up lights, hood ornaments, side trims, and exterior mirrors. The electric clock and the two-speed windshield wipers are standard. There are several options available including the selection of three exterior colors (red, white and black) and only one tan tan interior color. Power windows and power seats are available but air conditioning was not available in 1955.

Measured at 127.58 mph (205.32 km/h) in Flying Mile, and performing well in NASCAR, the C-300 generated interest that was not reflected in the modest 1,725 sales figures.

When the C300 competes in NASCAR, it is painted to advertise that it is "the fastest car in the world".

1956 300B

The 1956 300B is quite similar externally, distinguished by new tailfin treatment, but with larger engines, two 354 cu models at (5.8Ã, L) Hemi V8 with 340 or 355 hp (254 or 265 kW). This generation's companion was introduced as DeSoto Adventurer, which is less fancy, while still sharing many mechanics, giving DeSoto a performance enhancement model. A total of 1,102 were sold. Performance was slightly better than the previous year, measured at nearly 140 mph (225 km/h). A 6.17 backside ratio is also added to the option. Front leg room is 44.6 inches. New is a Highway Hi-Fi phonograph player.

With 355 hp optional (265 kW) 354 cu in engine (5.8 L), 300B became the first American car to produce 1 horsepower per cubic inch, besting Chevrolet with 288 cu fuel injected at (4.6 L) by one year.

1957 300C

The 3007 year 300C model is restyled, featuring a large "yawn" front grille and larger tailfins. The Hemi engine was upgraded to 392 cuÃ, at (6,4Ã, L) with 375Ã, hp (280 kW), or as a limited edition 390Ã, hp (290Ã, kW) version (18 built). A convertible model is available for the first time. The car has a number of red, white, and blue '300C' medals on the sides, hood, trunk, and interior. 1,918 coupe and 484 convertible built. A/C was $ 495.

1958 300D

The 1958 model is the last use of FirePower Hemi at 300. The engine is still 392 cuÃ, at (6.4 L), but tuned to 380 hp (280 kW) as standard. Thirty-five cars were built with fuel injection and shipped 390 hp (290 kW), but the system was problematic and most cars were immediately replaced with standard twin-quad carburetor configurations. A 300D was pushed to 156,387 mph (251,680 km/h) at the Bonneville Salt Flats that year. A total of 618 hardtop and 191 convertibles were produced, partly because of the recession in the economy.

1959 300E

Year 1959 model year saw the Hemi engine replaced by the new Chrysler Gold lion V8 head at 413 cuÃ, in (6.8 L) displacement (which Chrysler called "lion-heart"). The output power remains approximately the same at 380 hp (280 kW). Total sales include 522 coupes and 125 convertibles. The power swivel chair is standard.

1960 300F

1960 300F introduces the new 413 cu on Wedge machines (6.8Ã, L) that deliver 375 hp (280 kW) in standard form. To increase power at low and medium rpm, a special "cross-ram" intake manifold is lowered. Instead of the normal V8 center intake manifold engine with the carburetor at the top, the cross-ram consists of two pairs of 307 in (760 mm) long distributed pipes crossed each other so that each set is given opposite sides of the engine.. Carburetors and air purifiers hang over the side of the engine above the fender well. This long tube is tuned so that the resonance in the air column helps force air into the cylinder at the engine speed. Also new is a four bucket seat of leather with a full-length console from the dash to the back of the back. The rotating front seat is installed as standard equipment.

Special version 400Ã, hp (300Ã,wW) "short ram" is produced for the competition; in this case, the part that is set from the stack is only 15 in (380 mm) in length (though the overall tube length remains at 30 "), so the resonance effect is generated at higher engine speeds.Only 15" short ram "cars are produced, this also equipped with the exotic yet often troublesome 4-speed French Pont-a-Mousson manual developed for the Chrysler-powered Vega Vega.Around 4 of these "Special GTs" are known to exist, including one convertible and one with air conditioning, it is believed that 15 was originally produced.

Bodywork was also reworked in 1960, using the new lightweight body construction of Chrysler and given a sharp-edged styling with an outer fin that is visually separated from the sides. The trunk lid of "toilet lid" contributes to the opinion that demeans 300F and has been lost after one year of this production.

Sales increased to 969 coupe and 248 convertibles.

1961 300G

In 1961 300G saw another restyle. The grid, previously wider at the bottom than the top, is reversed; Quad headlights, previously side by side, are arranged in an angled fashion, inward at the bottom, in a way reminiscent of 1958-1960 Lincolns, 1959 Buicks and 1963-1966 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud Mulliner Park Ward coupe. The small parking lights under the headlights are also tilted and V-shaped, and the front bumper is delivered at each end, like a spoon. At the rear, the taillights are moved from the fins to the tail below them, and the fins are made sharper. Power windows are standard.

Mechanically, the short "ram" engine and the "long ram" remained the same, although expensive French manual transmission was dropped, and replaced with a more reliable and still expensive Chrysler manual transmission (referred to as 'option code 281'). Currently there are only five cars with this transmission. Code 281 cars may have been made for the Daytona Flying Mile of 1961, although like the Special F of 1960, there are no special records kept by Chrysler. Unlike Special 300F (which is randomly pulled from the line and upgraded for Flying Mile), 300G has a specific build code (281).

1962 300H

From 1962 300H , fins disappeared, such as the unique place of the series of letters in the Chrysler row; there is now a whole Chrysler 300 Sport Series (including a four-door hardtop along with two door hardtop and convertible), along with 300H. Externally there is a slight difference between 300H and 300 Sport Series (except for the "300H" badge on the driver's side of the trunk), and many 300H features can be ordered as an option on other models. Under the hood of 300H, the cross-ram machine becomes an option, and there is a return to the installation of an inline 4-barrel double carbondi from 300E as a base power plant. With a little power boost and 300Ã, lb (140Ã,®) body lighter, 300H faster than 300G, but the loss of exclusivity coupled with high prices makes this as the best-selling series this year, with only 435 coupes and 135 convertibles sold. The regular 300 series (non-letter) uses a 383 cu engine at (6.3 L) B.

All 300 for 1962 was downgraded to the Newport/Dodge 880 122-inch wheelchair body.

1963 300J

Further restyling for 1963 300J (the letter "I" is skipped because people will confuse for number "1".) Leaving the car with a smoother and sharper 1960s look. (Divided by the Newport and New Yorker series, this body design was the last one laid out during Virgil Exner's lifetime as Chrysler's styling chief.) The series-letter conversion was dropped, leaving the hardtop. The only machines available are 413 cuÃ, in (6.8Ã, L) ram-induced V8, with an increase of 10Ã, hp (7.5 kW) from 1962. The redesigned and more luxurious interior features an odd steering wheel. 300J faster than the standard 300H of the previous year, with a top speed of 142 mph (229 m/h), 8.0 seconds 0-60 mph, and a quarter-mile stand time of 15.8 seconds with a terminal speed of 89 mph (143 km/h). Sales are very bad, with only 400 cars being produced. As for the non-300 letter, 300 convertible is the official speed car for the 1963 Indianapolis 500-Mile Race. Power steering is standard.

1964 300K

Convertible back for 1964 300K , but the "cross-ram" engine becomes an additional cost option that is available only for 300K. A 413 cu in (6.8 L) Wedge with a single carburator Carter AFB 3614S 4-barrel, regular intake manifold, and 360 hp (270 kW) is a new standard engine. Leather seats are also no longer standard. All this reduces the base price by more than a thousand dollars, and sales responds to the greatest number ever; 3,022 coupe and 625 convertible. The center console is standard.

1965 300L

Year 1965 300L is the last year of the traditional letter series. It featured a complete restyle with slab sides and a high "greenhouse" introduced by Elwood Engel when he replaced Virgil Exner as Chrysler style tops. It was a linear look and a panoramic windshield that had been used since 1957 was dropped. The cross-ram machine is no longer available, leaving the 413 cu engine at (6.8 L) with regular carburettes and inlet manifold as standard. Each feature on 300L can be ordered as an option on the regular 300; thus, the only difference is the "300L" badge. A total of 2,405 coupes and 440 convertibles were sold.

1970 Hurst 300

1970 does not have a single-letter suffix from its ancestor and comes five years after Chrysler's last Letters Series, 300L. Many car historians do not include the Hurst 300 as a Letter Series model. The car concept, however, fits in with the Letter Series cars, as this is a high-performance variant of 300 luxurious, built with input from Hurst Performance aftermarket parts manufacturers. Only 501 units are believed to have been built.

The Hurst 300s are all 2 doors and share a white and gold paint scheme similar to Oldsmobile and Pontiac Hurst models that day. Skipper and trunklid (with spoiler mold) are both fiberglass. All Hurst 300 has brownish brown leather interiors that straight out of the Empire and can have with 727 automatic pistols of columns or consoles. All come with 375 hp (280 kW) 440 cu at (7.2Ã, L) 4-barrel TNT V8 engine. The road test recorded an hour 0-60 at 7.1 seconds with / 4 miles in 15.9 seconds. "Not bad for a carrier weighing 4,100 pounds (1,900 kg)", they said.

Of the 501 units sold, one documented convertible has been used as a Hurst promotional car and the other is believed to be a dealer equipped with 426 cuÃ, in (7.0Ã, L) Hemi, also, convertible.

Collectibility

All original letter series cars were considered collectible in 2005, but the early years were much more desirable. C-300 and 300B, especially examples of red/maroon, are increasingly becoming some of the most valuable models of all performance cars of 1950 due to their exquisite styling, high performance, and scarcity. The 300C through 300G convertibles is the most desirable price due to scarcity and low survival rates; the arrival of a regular 300 series car in 1962 made the next letter series seem less special and less in demand by collectors.

At an auction at the Robson Estate in Gainesville, Georgia on November 13, 2010, a 1960 300F convertible equipped with a 400 hp (298 kW) engine plant and a 4-speed Pont-a-Mousson sell for $ 437,250.

There is one concept vehicle called Chrysler 300, made in 1991. It featured the body of a sports car and a Viper engine. It was never produced.

The 300-letter series name was raised in 1999 at 300M Chrysler; but the 2005 300 is closest to the original with its rear-wheel drive, and the V8 engine once again uses the name "Hemi".
