History

Elgin, previously named Blaney, and originally Jeffers, traces the history of Europe-America to the post office established in the area in 1898. The small community whose postal service adopted the name Jeffers after his first postmaster, William T. Jeffers. The public did not see much growth until the Airline of the Railway Company started expansion in the area in 1900. Development took place near the train depot and the post office. Marine ship agents, in an effort to increase the use of railways, promote businesses along the route, including Jeffers. The city, and the post office, eventually renamed Blaney in honor of a New York banker who helped fund the expansion of trains in the area. The town of Blaney was officially leased and established on 23 January 1908.

Blaney's first post office, Jesse T. Ross (who served for forty-seven years), was the first to open a business, along with D. D. Evans. The established village of brick school schools was established in 1912. Very little growth was seen in the city over the next 15 years; The Camden Chronicle said in 1927: "I do not think there are fifty people in [Blaney], actually you would not know it was a city." However, in 1930, Blaney built his own high school. In 1931, Highway 1 was completed. A completely paved road stretches along the east coast, it runs parallel to the predetermined rail track for cutting through Blaney. It offers new routes to bring tourism and business to the area. This is still the main route to the city today.

In the late 1950s, postwar industrial developments occurred throughout the Wateree West Region along Highway A. A. In 1958 the deal closed with the Whitehead Brothers Sand Company, which opened a $ 300,000 sand casting between Lugoff and Blaney. State Senator John West recruited the Elgin National Watch Company in 1962 to move to the area. Companies are interested in unused land and labor market potential to be recruited from nearby Columbia. Residents chose to rename the city from Blaney to Elgin in a 61-16 vote. In September 1962, plans were confirmed to build a $ 1 million assembly plant in the city. The factory offers 240 jobs and receives over a thousand applications when the recruitment process begins.

Due to the new plant, the city improves the water supply system in the area. In 1963, Elgin drilled a well as part of a new water system for $ 150,000, and the factory began production. In 1967, officials from the Elgin National Watch Company announced that the plant would be sold to B. F. Goodrich, a manufacturer of tennis shoes, due to the inability of the company to compete with foreign-made products. That year, Hardwicke Chemical Company broke ground on a 15-acre site near Elgin.

Elgin's growth has continued in recent years. In 2005, a new sewer system was completed for newly municipal towns and complexes for town hall houses, police departments, and fire stations. The city grew by more than 50% between the 2000 and 2010 censuses, from 806 to 1311 people with sustained growth expected in the future. The current Mayor of Elgin is Melissa Emmons.
