The Harley-Davidson FL is the model used on Harley-Davidson motorcycles since 1941. The FL prefix is mostly applied to Harley-Davidson's large framed bikes, including the current Touring series, as well as the Softail series, especially those with traditional styling, 16-inch front wheels, and Springer forks or large-diameter telescopic fork fronts.

Model FL awal

FL was introduced to the Harley-Davidson line of models in 1941. He used the OHV "Kucklehead" engine of the 741 cc (1.210Ã, cc) version that drives the EL in the form of 61Ã, cuÃ, (1,000Ã, cc). FL shares its frame with EL and with U and UL, which use a flathead engine measuring 74Ã, cubic inches. FL replaces UH and ULH, which use the same frame as 80  ° c on a flathead (1300 cc) engine.

FL continued relatively unchanged until 1948, when it and EL were given a redesigned "Panhead" engine with the same capacity as before. This machine has some improvements over the previous "Knucklehead", including self-adjusting hydraulic lifter and aluminum cylinder head to reduce weight and improve cooling. The U and UL flathead twins were discontinued in 1948, leaving the models of OHV EL and FL as Harley-Davidson's large-frame motorcycles.

Hydra-Glide

In 1949, a year after receiving the "Panhead" engine, FL was given a new front suspension featuring a telescopic wet fork with hydraulics, replacing the main link spring suspension at the time. This fork is standard on all large twin models for 1949, including E, EL, F, and FL. Harley-Davidson offers a spring suspension unit on this model and recommends its use on a combination of sidecar, because the hydraulic fork does not have enough footprint to allow a fairly stable combination for safe operation.

During their debut year of 1949, Harley-Davidson refers to their new suspension system as "hydraulic front ends". The Harley-Davidson marketing department promoted a new suspension system by renaming the large "Hydra Glide" twin models for the 1950 model. It was Harley-Davidson's first departure from his alphabetical policy to identify his models. This name will change twice in the history of large E and F series models, each time signaling an improvement in bicycle technology. In addition, Glide ending will be used on other models, based on both FL and FX formats.

In 1952, standard transmission Hydra-Glide hand-shift/foot-clutch equipped with optional foot-shift/hand-clutch. The original format continued to be offered as an option until 1978. 1952 is also the last year of 61Ã, Â ° c in (1,000Ã, cc) EL, making FL as the last remaining large framework model.

Although the founding of 1903 is now the basis for the "Birthday Model", Harley-Davidson's 50th Golden Anniversary was celebrated in 1954 with special paint and badges on the front fender. The first year of production was 1904.

A more-tuned engine with high-compression heads, high-lift cams, and polished ports, is offered with the FLH version of 1955. FLH's appointment continues to date.

Duo-Glide

The FL model was given a new frame in 1958. This frame includes a rear swingarm suspended by a pair of coil-over-shock suspension units. In honor of this fully suspended chassis, the FL model name was changed from Hydra-Glide to Duo-Glide.

Unlike the OHV configuration, the aluminum head, and the telescopic-fork front suspension, however, the improved technology was applied to the first small-skeleton bike, the K-series had received a rear suspension in 1952.

Electra-Glide

The third and final changes given in the FL basic model name will occur in 1965, the last year of the "Panhead" machine. This last "Panheads" is the first "big-twin" Harley-Davidson engine equipped with an electric starter, Servi-Car has received electric start the previous year. This innovation for Harley-Davidson was greeted by the name of the new model Electra Glide.

In 1966, "Panhead" gave way to "Shovelhead", getting ten percent improvement in its process.

A fork-mounted fairing became available at Electra Glides in 1969. It was unofficially known as the fairing "batwing". Although bathing fairing is an easy choice in the early Electra Glides, it can not be removed on later machines, as the instrument is moved from the fuel tank to the fairing.

Frame FL is the basis for Super Glide 1971 FX. FX marries FL frame with XL Sportster fork, with a speaker handle and a large fiberglass tailpiece that complements the Super Glide specification.

FL was given front disc brakes in 1972.

The three-speed plus reverse option was stopped in 1977.

A 1977 Harley-Davidson Confederate Edition from FLH Electra Glide featuring warning paint and tanks and fender decals are produced. Production units in low volume amount - just 44 - making it one of the rarest motorcycles in the company.

An 80 Â ° c at (1300 cc) engine was made optional on the Electra Glide in 1978. However, FL designation did not change as a result. In 1981, the 80-cubic inch machine was a standard engine; 74 cuÃ, in (1.210Ã, cc) the machine is discontinued.

The low-compression FL engine was discontinued in 1979, as was the option for hand-shift/foot-clutch transmission controls.

Go down Glide

FLT Tour Glide was introduced in 1979 as a 1980 model. Sold alongside the existing FLH Electra Glide, FLT has a larger frame with rubber engine mount, five-speed transmission, 80 Â ° c deep engine (1,300 cc), and frame fairing installed. In order for the FLT frame, larger and heavier than the large and heavy FLH frame, will handle well, the front fork is given a radical steering geometry mounted behind the steering head, with a frame behind the steering wheel hidden to allow an adequate steering wheel.

The FLHT was introduced in 1983. This is Electra Glide based on FLT Tour Glide frame, but uses Electra Glide "batwing" fairing rather than fairing Glide Tour Glide frame. The FLHT police version is FLHTP.

Except for the FLH base, all FL of 1984 is equipped with a new Evolution engine mounted in rubber and a five-speed transmission.

All of the "Shovelhead" engines were discontinued by the 1985 model year. In that year, FLH four high-performance engines were modified to accept the installation of rubber and Evolution engines. FLH was discontinued in 1986; all Touring models afterwards use FLT/FLHT frames. FLT Tour Glide, which introduced the current Touring frame, was derived from the lineup in 1996. A smaller version of the fairing frame-mounted Tour will return with FLTR Road Glide in 1998.

The Evolution Machine was replaced by Twin Cam 88 machine on all large Harley-Davidson framed motors in 1999. Twin Cam machine was enlarged from 88Ã, ° C. to 96 Ã, cu.in. in 2007.

Unsuitable Extension

The unfair version of FLH Electra Glide, known as FLHS Electra Glide Sport, is available from 1979 to 1982. FLHT Electra Glide which is not refined re-introduced the name FLHS Electra Glide Sport in 1987. In 1994, FLHS Electra Glide Sport was replaced by the FLHR Road King, which continues to this day.

Tourist chassis 2009

For the 2009 model year, Harley-Davidson redesigned the entire range of the tour. These changes include a new frame, a new swingarm, a completely revised engine mounting system, 17-inch front wheels for all models except the Road King Classic, 6 Gallon US (23 liter, 5.0 liter) fuel tank 6-1. These changes result in greater load carrying capacity, better handling, smoother engines, longer range and less heat discharges transmitted to riders and passengers.

Tri-Glide Ultra Classic

Also released in the FL Touring range for the 2009 model year is the FLHTCUTG Tri Glide Ultra Classic, the first three-wheeled Harley-Davidson since the Servi-Car was discontinued in 1973. The model features a unique frame and an exclusive 103 cid engine into a tricycle.

FL Softails

Harley-Davidson introduced the Softail chassis in 1984. The original Softails used a small FX telescopic fork, but the FLFT Softail Heritage FLST with large FL telescopic forks was introduced in 1986. The FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic, with a large front fork and retro style, is in production at year 1988.

Other softwares with large forks follow, including the introduction of the fat boy FLSTF 1990 and the 1993 FLSTN "Cow Glide" that is only there. The FLST Heritage Special Base was discontinued in 1991. FLSTN continued after 1993 without bovine motifs as a Nostalgic model until 1996, replaced by FLSTS Heritage Springer IN 1997. Heritage Springer was produced through 2003, with FLSTSC Springer Classic introduced in 2005. Springer Heritage and Springer Classic set as FL though using Springer fork instead of a large telescopic FL fork.

In 2000, all Softails, including the FL model, were switched from the Evolution engine to the Twin Cam 88B counterbalanced engine specifically developed for rigid machine mounting in this frame. FLSTN's appointment back in 2005 with Softail Deluxe.
