The Prince is the code name for a straight-four family car engine developed by PSA Peugeot CitroÃÆ'án and BMW. It is a compact engine family of 1.4 to 1.6 L in displacement and includes the most modern features including direct injection of gasoline, turbocharging, BMW VANOS and variable time valves.
The BMW variant of the Prince machine is known as N12, N13, N14, N16 and N18 . It replaces the Tritec engine family in Mini and was first introduced in 2006 for the MINI. Then in 2011 also for the model BMW F20 116i and 118i. This is the installation option of the first longitudinal engine for the Prince machine.
PSA has started using Prince's family in 2006 to replace parts of their TU family (other parts replaced by EB engines) - Peugeot 207 became the first car to receive it.
Engine components are manufactured by PSA at the Douvrin facility, France, with the assembly of MINI and BMW engines at Hams Hall in Warwickshire, England. This cooperation was announced on July 23, 2002 with the first engine produced in 2006. The Prince's engine project is not associated with Prince Motor Company.
At the end of 2006, an extension of cooperation between the two groups was announced, promising a new four-cylinder engine, without further details.
On September 29, 2010, it was announced by BMW that the 1.6Turbo version of the Prince's engine will be supplied from 2012 to Saab for use in upcoming models, especially 9-3. But with SAAB's supply closure never started.
At the Geneva Auto Show 2011, Saab unveiled their latest concept vehicle Saab PhoeniX with BMW Prince Engine 1.6T 200 hp
On June 25, 2014, the 1.6 liter Prince Turbo engine won the eighth International Engine of the Year Award in a row in the 1.4 to 1.8 liter category. In 2014 the Prince's engine beat, among other things, the new BMW B38 engine that replaced the Prince's engine in the Mini and BMW ranks.

Design
The Prince's family shares a basic block dimension with the previous family of PSA TU machines. The engineering design is directed by the PSA with some support provided by BMW, including Valvetronic variable valve system on the intake side. Other features include oil and water pumps on-demand. Direct injection of gasoline with twin-scroll turbochargers will be used on higher power versions.
All Prince machines will share 84 mm cylinder spacing, with 77 mm (3 inches) holes. The 1.6 liter engine has a stroke of 85.5 mm. This machine has a two-part "bedplate" aluminum crankcase for extra rigidity.

The 1.6 L engine is used on the second-generation MINI and various models of Peugeot 207. It has a stroke of 85.8 mm (3.4 inches) with a total of 1598 cc displacement.
The naturally aspirated variant ( EP6 , EP6C ) has a conventional fuel injection and a missing foam head cylinder. The 11: 1 compression ratio creates 120 PS output (118 hp/88 kW) at 6000 rpm with redline 6500 rpm. The torque is 118 lb-ft (160Ã, NÃ,m) at 4250 rpm.

The 1.6 L turbocharged unit adds direct injection of gasoline and has a special low-pressure die-cast head. It has a stroke of 85.8 mm (3.4 inches) with a total of 1598 cc displacement.
Initially, there were two versions on offer - THP150 and THP175, also known as EP6DT and EP6DTS respectively in Peugeot. The first is then updated as EP6CDT and also THP163, EP6CDTM . There is also EP6CDT MD - with a lower compression ratio.
For maximum torque of THP150 is 177 lb-ft (240Ã, NÃm) at 1400 rpm, fixed flat to 5000 rpm. Output 150 PS (148 hp/110 kW) at 5500 rpm.
Application:
For maximum torque of THP163 is 177 lb-ft (240Ã, NÃm) at 1400 rpm, fixed flat to 5000 rpm. The power output is 165 PS (163 hp/110 kW) at 5500 rpm.
Application:
For THP175 ( EP6DTS , then EP6CDTS ) the maximum torque is 178Ã, lb-ft (247Ã, à ° C) at 1600Ã, rpm, flat to 5000 r rpm. The output power is 175 PS (173 hp/128 kW) at 5500 rpm. Overboost function is available which temporarily increases torque up to 192 Ã, à £ lb-ft (260Ã, NÃ, à · m) between 1700Ã, rpm and 4500Ã, rpm in 3-5 gears.
Application:
In 2010 Peugeot released a 1.6 THP ( EP6CDTX ) engine with 200 hp at 5500 RPM, maximum torque of 275 @ 1700 RPM. It features direct injection, twin-scroll turbochargers and variable valve lifts.
Application:
PSA has now released a new Euro 6 engine based on THP in the following Machine code:
BMW N13 / Mini N18
The 1.6 liter turbocharged variant used by BMW and Mini is called N13 for the BMW app and N18 for Mini apps. The N13 replaces the naturally aspirated BMW N43 and is manufactured from 2011 to 2015. This is the first turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine since 2002 Turbo ceased production in 1974.
The N13/N18 engine uses direct injection, a twin-scroll turbocharger and a Valvetronic (variable valve lift). BMW sells the N13 in addition to the BMW 4X engine with a larger direct turbocharged engine. The N13 is effectively replaced by BMW B38 3-cylinder turbocharged engine.

Produksi
Production of the MINI version of the 'Prince' family of machines will end in 2016, and be replaced by the latest 3 and 4 cylinder engine families - the BMW B36, BMW B38 and BMW B48.
In 2015 announced, in Hong Kong stock exchange, that BMW has signed an IPR agreement with XCE. They will make N18 TVDI machines in China for use in various Brilliance Automotive vehicles (JV Partner of BMW in China) as well as for other Chinese OEMs.
PSA will continue to develop a higher power model of the engine family, with future production planned for China with its JV partners DONFENG (CAPSA) and Changan.
