USS Cronin (DE/DEC-704) is the Buckley destroyer class Buckley of the United States Navy, the second Navy ship named for Head Gunner Cornelius Cronin (1838-1912), who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his "cold and tight attention" in the Battle of Mobile Bay.

Cronin was launched on 5 January 1944 at Defoe Shipbuilding Company in Bay City, Michigan, sponsored by Mrs. E.Ã, B. Cronin, son-in-law of the late Chief Gunner Cronin. He was commissioned on 5 May 1944, with Lieutenant Commander A.Ã,G. Cooke USNR, as commander.

Histori

Cronin left New York on July 21 to escort a convoy to Bizerte, Tunisia, back to Norfolk, Virginia on September 7. A second convoy escorted the voyage from October 2 to November 18 where he rescued 24 saves from SS George W. McKnight on October 14 to bring him to Palermo, Sicily. On December 16, he departed for New York for the Pacific, arriving on Manus Island on January 22, 1945.

Assigned to the Philippine Sea Border, Cronin was operated from Leyte on convoy escort duty until the end of World War II. On August 30, he departed from Manila to Okinawa. From this base, it supported the reoccupation of mainland China, transport escorted to Jinsen, Korea, filtered out the Bougainville/CVE-100 introducing aircraft carrier in Taku and Tsingtao, and escorted the LST convoy to Jinsen. He departed Okinawa on November 8 for Boston, Massachusetts, arriving there on December 15th. Cronin arrived in Green Cove Springs, Florida, on January 19, 1946, and was placed outside the commission as a reserve there on May 31, 1946. He was reclassified DEC-704 , at 13 September 1950.

On February 9, 1951, Cronin took part in the main exercises in the Atlantic, and operated in Norfolk with training assignments that included exercises in Key West by submarine in March 1953. Cronin > Returning to Green Cove Springs on September 24, and again placed out of commission on December 4, 1953. He was reclassified back to DE-704 on December 27, 1957.

On December 16, 1971, Cronin was pulled into the sea and drowned as a target aircraft. His final resting place is listed at 31 Â ° 43'Ã, N., 76Ã, Â ° 15'Ã, W.

Awards

Cronin was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the Asia Pacific Campaign Medal, and the European-Middle East-Africa Campaign Medal for World War II services. He also received the Chinese Navy's Medal Force and Medal Medal for his operations in the Far East after the close of the war.
